Diaries from Chipata

I've left my home in Oxford, UK to live and work for a year in a little city called Chipata in Eastern Zambia. Here you can follow what I get up to; the ups and the downs, the sunny days and the rainy ones. Find out about my work with three HIV peer education project and youth communities in Chipata. And I'll do my best to let you know how you can get involved to improve the lives of those living with HIV in Africa and beyond.

Diaries from Chipata: Less than a month left

http://chipatadiaries.blogspot.com/2007/09/less-than-month-left.html

Thursday, September 06, 2007. Less than a month left. We’ve spent much of the past year reminiscing about the UK and making top ten lists of things we’re going to eat (mushrooms, Coop apple and cinnamon English muffins), see (Home and Away) and do (a proper pint at a proper pub.) We’re now counting down the last month in. And it’s started to dawn on me that there actually might be things that I miss about Chipata. Buying in-season veg fresh from the market. No matter where you go in. Mzungu, give me mone...

Diaries from Chipata: February 2007

http://chipatadiaries.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 26, 2007. Anyway here’s some pictures of the crazy little might as promised. PS we named her before checking what sex she was! Monday, February 12, 2007. This weekend was no exception. There’s been a break in the rains this past week which is great for using our solar heated shower bag. We’re still waiting for the landlord to fit a hot water tank – I’ve got a feeling we shouldn’t hold our breath. Thankfully, there’s another, more welcoming, lodge fifteen minutes up the road that do...

Diaries from Chipata: September 2007

http://chipatadiaries.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 25, 2007. Two things I’ll definitely remember about our trip up to Tanzania: transport and food. We used almost every mode of transport you can think of – sleeper trains, minibuses, dalla dallas (riding in the back of a canter Zanzibar style), hitching on the back of a truck, bicycle taxis, taxis, coaches, ferries and a catamaran made out of mango tree and of course out own two feet. Anyway I won’t bore you all too much with the detail but here are a few pictures of the trip. Iringa tu...

Diaries from Chipata: October 2006

http://chipatadiaries.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 28, 2006. After spending most of the day shifting furniture back and forth on the roof of Richard’s Landrover, we finally moved into our very own house last Thursday. The excitement of our new found independence quickly vanished as we noticed every room came complete with a resident creepy crawly and we’d forgotten to buy bug spray! The family gathered their belongings, built a new bed from scratch and went off into the night to find somewhere else to stay. It took all our common se...

Diaries from Chipata: January 2007

http://chipatadiaries.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 20, 2007. Zambia - some random thoughts. Since arriving in Zambia over three months ago, Henry and I have had endless conversations and more than one disagreement over whether there really is any hope for Zambia? She sent the coordinator off to chase after the money, saying that if it wasn’t returned she would deduct it from his (the person who made the mistake’s) wages. The money was returned, everyone was paid the rightful amount and we all went back to work. Contrast this with anothe...

Back in London | Live it Lively

https://deepinthedesh.wordpress.com/2007/09/29/back-in-london

Shesh in the Desh. September 29, 2007. Ok, so this is an epilogue. I’ve been back in Britain now almost three and a half weeks, which have been packed. I’ve got a job working for CAFOD. Which is great, my grandmother died, which is awful, and Tottenham are not quite playing to their full potential, which is ugly. The biggest difference is that everywhere is smoke free, which I don’t approve of at all – this. Responses to “Back in London”. Feed for this Entry. October 10, 2007 at 10:29 am. Meanwhile, at t...

VSO | Live it Lively

Although in Bangladesh I’ll be working for an indigenous community rights organisation, it’s all happening through the organisation Voluntary Service Overseas. They are a massive international development charity that work through volunteers. They currently have about 1500 volunteers working around the world, usually for two years, but some for just one year (like me, because I’m young), and in some cases for just six weeks or something like that, if there’s a particular situation. They do good stuff!

This is the story of me in Namibia. Experiences, rants and ramblings from a VSO volunteer based in Windhoek. September 20, 2007. Posted by isabelleinnamibia in Beauty. They are most wildly known for their nudity and their glowing red skin. The women wear little more than a loin cloth of leather and symbolic intricate jewellery from leather and metal, and cover themselves in a clay-like substance made from ochre powder and butter fat called. The Queen Lady of the village then took us into her main hut to ...

Eer, yeah, this is pretty standard for Ovitoto I’m afraid , I try explaining to the new girl, who is taking it all in her stride. I do get the feeling that she is wondering exactly what I have been doing for the last year in this quiet dusty little community. Oh it is near there. No,. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
