Grand Folly

Monday, 26 February 2018. A New Year but a Slow Start. A combination of factors has kept me from recording any changes in the garden since 2018 began. They comprised a brief winter break in Mexico, followed by a bad head cold that kept me indoors, followed by snow that buried much of the backyard. Only my little metal cat seemed to shrug it off. The stems of Narcissus. Rijnveld's Early Sensation were smothered by the snow, but as it begins to melt they are struggling to stand upright once again. A new ac...

Grand Folly: November 2014

https://christineallen.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, 27 November 2014. What a difference a month makes. A look back to my post of October 28 shows the garden still full of foliage and flowers. But the last couple of weeks has brought days of frost followed by strong winds and rain, leaving few signs of colour anywhere. The Enkianthus. That I was admiring in the previous post has reacted by dropping most of its leaves, and those that remain have turned brown. At least the withering rosehips on climbing 'Lykkefund' are still red,. Which is, with go...

Grand Folly: The Water Feature

https://christineallen.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-water-feature.html

Tuesday, 28 April 2015. The first year we attached a grid of concrete reinforcing wire and grew runner beans up the wires . They made a nice green curtain, obscuring the object but not the noise it made. The following year, we replaced the wire grid with bamboo screens, which blocked the view even more efficiently but still did little about the noise. Michael's solution was to make the pond wider and deeper so that the raccoons couldn't reach the pump. Unfortunately, this uncovered two huge boulders ...

Grand Folly: March 2014

https://christineallen.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 25 March 2014. It's astonishing how promptly some plants respond to the coming of the equinox. Daily I see more green growth, and daily more flowers open tentative petals. The spring bouquet under the Corylopsis. Is vivid with colour now. Among the blooms are double pink Hellebore. Amethyst Gem', blue Anemone blanda. And a creamy yellow species tulip, T. turkestanica. At the back are the pale green bells of Helleborus foetidus. Shine crisply white in the shade. The flowers on Salix. The hellebor...

Grand Folly: The Flowers of Spring

https://christineallen.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-flowers-of-spring.html

Monday, 13 April 2015. The Flowers of Spring. When we got back from a short trip to Mexico at the end of January, I continued to take photos of the garden as spring advanced, but I've been slow to add them to this blog. So here's a précis of what has been happening in the last couple of months. The pear tree branches, still bare, were festooned with brilliant green moss. Snowdrops in the dappled shade under Corylopsis pauciflora. Pushed up through fallen leaves,. Including delicate A. nemorosa. Above the...
