Elections and Consequences in 2016. 8220;In every child who is born, under no matter what circumstances, and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of the human race is born again: and in him, too, once more, and of each of us, our terrific responsibility towards human life; towards the utmost idea of goodness, of the horror of error, and of God”? Teachers are the gardeners of humankind. May 7, 2016. May 8, 2016. Those weren’t the days, my friend…. When socializing with colleagues, the topic of conversation often turns to public education policy. A curmudgeon in the group invariably makes reference to. The good old days. Marked by rote recitation of the times-tables, a time when all children were little engines of on-demand knowledge acquisition, and all teachers found a way to convey critical knowledge. There is only one problem with the argument.

Teachers are the gardeners of humankind. March 5, 2017. March 7, 2017. How Do We Get There From Here? An old Winston Churchill quote has been getting a lot of play of late, but it bears repeating. Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing, but only after they have exhausted all the other possibilities. The quip is applicable for so many of our national endeavors, except for public education where we try the same thing over and over while expecting a different result. Instead of compensatin...

Teachers are the gardeners of humankind. September 12, 2016. Those who cannot teach, govern. Wish a heartfelt Happy New Year! To all educators embarking on the new school year for it has become clear that many of our national leaders are oblivious of the eternal optimism that compels dedicated educators to stand before their students each fall. It is clear that too many candidates for office are clueless about the real lives of those they hope to govern. Is a terrible misnomer;. On the rare occasions edu...

Teachers are the gardeners of humankind. October 16, 2016. Dismissing the factory model school. In his landmark work. Between the World and Me. Ta-Nehisi Coates laments the hypocritical nature of the message he received in the Baltimore City Schools, I was a curious boy, but the schools were not concerned with curiosity. They were concerned with compliance. When managing misbehavior replaces academic instruction, intellectual development is stifled. We can no longer take pride in the occasional. The deve...

Doc Horse Tales: The Infinite in One Step
http://dochorsetales.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-infinite-in-one-step.html
On the interplay of word, image, and social justice. Monday, February 9, 2015. The Infinite in One Step. Photo by Joseph McCaleb. Applications related to teaching and learning, particularly to my current courses, are interspersed throughout. My gut revolted when I first heard him say it, and my conviction that he’s wrong is even stronger today even though his position aligns with our hegemonic standards/accountability/testing regime. To see a World in a Grain of Sand. And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,.
Doc Horse Tales: Making Good Stories
http://dochorsetales.blogspot.com/2011/01/making-good-stories.html
On the interplay of word, image, and social justice. Wednesday, January 5, 2011. In twenty days,. I’ll be innovating a course at the University of Maryland. Called Good Stories: Teaching Narratives for Peace and Justice, perhaps the culmination of my forty-odd years as a professional educator. One strong drive comes from the vitality that I feel in the dynamic engagement of story, particularly as its nature flexes into emergent forms of digital media. The work of civilization and consciousness, to me, me...

Doc Horse Tales: Destiny. Is it crushing or joyful?
http://dochorsetales.blogspot.com/2014/09/destiny-is-it-crushing-or-joyful.html
On the interplay of word, image, and social justice. Saturday, September 6, 2014. Destiny. Is it crushing or joyful? In a way, that’s the same question blasted out by the Baba Yaga to the traveler in quest of the beloved: “Are you here because you wanna be or because ya haf’t’be? 8221; While anyone awake vibrates in the question of destiny, the devil and other merchandisers specialize in sleeping spells, addictive sells, seductive lies, religious shells, workaholic half-truths, and. On the interplay of word, image, and social justice. Thursday, November 13, 2014. Meeting with the Ruler. 8220;Because your path led to the firebird feather, your life now depends on finding the Firebird! In the telling of our story on Tuesday, one I’ve told perhaps twenty times, a nuance was coming through, one that I haven’t felt before and that seemed quite significant. “ The Horse of Power. Action, and we organize. 8221; A person can get stuck at the feather level. In “Horse of Power,” th...We’...

On the interplay of word, image, and social justice. Saturday, July 7, 2012. 8220;The Sense You Were Born With”. You don't have the sense you were born with! This line drags or entices and probably does both simultaneously or alternately. The specific phrase drives the story of Epaminondas. As well as the parallel predecessors of Lazy Jack. And a subsequent Appalachian version. The line, “the sense you were born with,” links directly to Blake’s golden string. Leading to the city of God and to Rumi’...
Doc Horse Tales: A Storytelling Age: Information butand Quantum?

On the interplay of word, image, and social justice. Saturday, September 13, 2014. A Storytelling Age: Information butand Quantum? Overall, I like the message of the four-minute video “. Wisdom in the Age of Information. But—you knew there was going to be a “but” didn’t you, or there wouldn’t be a blog. No one,. No story, says it all. My reaction comes in my sense that situating wisdom atop a ladder with information as the base is missing something. Discovery: uncertainty and indeterminacy. For example, ...
Doc Horse Tales: More Authentic Identity with Digital Media Production

On the interplay of word, image, and social justice. Wednesday, February 13, 2013. More Authentic Identity with Digital Media Production. The first major assignment in our course (Good Stories: Teaching Narratives for Peace and Justice) involves making a digital media production on our individual identity. For a previous semester, I’d made a sample using iMovie on iPad: “. While I was initially ok with that production, upon repeated viewing I felt that it was too glitzy with flippant music. Challenges us...

On the interplay of word, image, and social justice. Monday, October 20, 2014. The Reality of Transformations. To muddle about in the question of “what is real? 8221; here are some considerations:. A How is Photo 1 real when the image is adjusted in iPhoto (as shown in the adjust window)? B How is Photo 2, taken a minute later from a few strides south, more or less real when the image is left unadjusted? C How, if at all, can both Photo 1 and Photo 2 be real? Moses’ burning bush? During and following the...

I think everybody's right, except me, so just forget I spoke, all right?
I love the concept of this game. I am a goofy robot that grows a giant plant. Mindless. Its really a simple and relaxing idea, just a downtime couch game. Unfortunately it was also a bit clunky. We say that we like new and inventive games, but I dont think thats really true. I think the reality is that we prefer the familiar ideas repurposed in a way that. New Blizzard is blissfully unaware of this and their games in no way reflect that design intent. I cant recommend it enough.

Clearing the progressive fog. Who needs term limits? On November 30th, 2017. Today the sexual harassment parade claimed Matt Lauer. We don’t need term limits to clear the Congressional swamp. All we need are accusers and the immediate termination of the offenders. What if these corporate sector rules applied to Conyers, Franken, et al? Right no need for term limits. One more question How did we come to this current reality of epidemic sexual harassment? On November 6th, 2017. How many dead in NYC? Gets a...
