1880 begann der Unternehmer Friedrich Richter im thüringischen Rudolstadt mit der Herstellung von Steinbaukästen, nachdem er die Erfindung dieser Art Baukästen von den Brüdern Otto und Gustav Lilienthal erworben hatte. Waren es anfangs vor allem Holzbaukästen, die als pädagogisch wertvolles Spielzeug für Kinder empfohlen wurden, gelangten nun die ersten Baukästen mit echten Sandsteinen auf den Markt.
