Our Chapter became incorporated in July 2003 with operations based in the Binghamton area. Chapter operations were transferred to the Syracuse area. Ellen Barnes, PhD. With appropriate education, vocational training and community living options and support systems, individuals with autism can lead dignified, productive lives in their communities and strive to reach their fullest potential. Autism is the most common of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders, affecting an estimated 1 in 68 births. Centers for Disease Control Prevention, 2014). This number has risen dramatically since 2004, when it was 1 in 125 births. Autism now affects almost 1 in 54 boys. Autism knows no racial, ethnic, social boundaries, family income, lifestyle, or educational levels and can affect any family, and any child. Early diagnosis and intervention are vital to the future development of the child!
