Pedantic Press: September 2014
http://pedanticpress.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 16 September 2014. I am an intelligent woman. I’ve raised four kids, I manage the day to day of a small company, I run a house, a home, an office. Okay, so why the hell can’t I make this damn diet work? I know the principles. I’ve done it before. And each time it worked. But three weeks in - eating chicken, salad, low fat everything, no sugar everything else, in other words nothing with taste – I stand on the scales and the weight loss in all that time is four pounds. It’s a diuretic. The muffin...

Pedantic Press: Blue Christmas
http://pedanticpress.blogspot.com/2014/12/blue-christmas.html
Sunday, 28 December 2014. Christmas and its overindulgent, overcrowded, overspent, overeaten glory. I wish I could enjoy it more without the constant shadow of Christmas past looming over me. Not only the bittersweet nostalgia of lost years and once happy memories with a sting in the tail, but with the resonance of the more recent events that clang in my ears, sometimes all too familiarly. This year, for the first time since we decided to get married, Christmas of too-long-ago to remember - 31, 31 years?

Pedantic Press: I see dead people.
http://pedanticpress.blogspot.com/2014/12/i-see-dead-people.html
Monday, 29 December 2014. I see dead people. They seem to always be with you whenever the camera swings towards you, finding you in the same place, unspeaking, zoned out, separate from everyone else. How did I not see this when I was younger. How did I not notice you were withdrawn, awkward and antisocial? And I’m funny, making jokes, laughing, grinning, when I’m not listening to my cousin George murder a country and western song, and quite rightly look bored out of my mind. We’re sitting watching ...

Pedantic Press: Busy work
http://pedanticpress.blogspot.com/2014/12/busy-work.html
Sunday, 28 December 2014. Ooh how I cried at the Golden Wedding video. I got through most of it with only a slight biting of the lip until we reached the end and there was a tenor singing 'Time to Say Goodbye' over snapshots of my parents taken over the years, then I burst into painful tears. It hurts. Loss is unendurable, and yet endure is the only thing you can do with it. Hiding from danger is survival. It's knowing when to hide, how to heal, and when you have to come out fighting. She's also right ab...

three prosecco four: December 2009
http://3prosecco4.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, 17 December 2009. Il était une fois Playmobil. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of Playmobil, the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris had this spectacular exhibition of some of the classics alongside a selection of the new ranges. We particularly like the Noah's Ark range, with the gorillas helping the elephants up the plank! Monday, 14 December 2009. A few pretty 'Jules et Jim'-esque pictures from a very cold and wintery Paris:. Sunday, 13 December 2009. Sunday, 6 December 2009. We'd been wond...

three prosecco four: February 2010
http://3prosecco4.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 17 February 2010. A famous dish in the Valdarno region of Tuscany, better than chicken or pigeon, or so he claims. It's casseroled in case you're interested. He has now been suspended following huge numbers of complaints, which is a real shame - we spent at least an hour last night wandering around San Lorenzo with a fishing net looking for dinner. Don't worry, that's not cat he's holding). For the full story (or The Times' version of it) look here. A campaign is sure to be started. Madness...

three prosecco four: Yummy Sicily
http://3prosecco4.blogspot.com/2010/05/yummy-sicily.html
Friday, 21 May 2010. We both returned significantly heavier from our recent trip to Sicily - good job we got the train home instead of the plane! The man in the photo above is trying to roll Rachel's lunch into a pannino! For produce, nowhere in Italy can beat Sicily. The markets are simply overflowing with amazing things and all of the fruit and veg looks like it has been on steroids - zucchini as long as your arm! Here are a few of the best things that we ate. Cannoli in Palermo:. 1 July 2010 at 08:57.

Pedantic Press: March 2014
http://pedanticpress.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Friday, 28 March 2014. In praise of jelly. But begone those days. Step forth Agar Agar and other forms of 'vegetarian' gelatin that leaves the lambs and calves frolicking about in the field, toes intact:. Agar-agar, or kanten:. Made from red algae, agar is often used in Asian desserts and firm jellies. It's flavorless and has a firmer, less jiggly texture than gelatin. The powdered form of agar is easiest to measure and use; bars and flakes should be dissolved in water first. See this post. Post, Vegan J...

Pedantic Press: Time Flies
http://pedanticpress.blogspot.com/2015/01/time-flies.html
Sunday, 4 January 2015. And I'm back at work tomorrow. More than two long, lovely weeks at home with nothing to do but relax (at least that was the theory) and it's back to normal. I was sitting on the sofa trying to organise my thoughts - what I needed to do, what I needed to finish, start, arrange, organise, ready for tomorrow, and I realised I hadn't thought about the coming year. What do I want to do? It's ego, and self-image, and self-worth. There are more. But I need my ugly sleep. Confessions of a...
