Country Eye by Ian Misselbrook

When, in the Bull on one Sunday afternoon in October 2004 Ian volunteered to produce a wildlife article for the Rippingale Village Website his idea was welcomed , and Country Eye Autumn 2004 was published the following month. Country Eye 42 - Gambian Firebirds

http://countryeye.org.uk/CountryEye42-GambianFirebirds.htm

Of this article was published in 'Birdwatch Magazine'. During the dry season from November to April bush fires are not unusual in the West African state of The Gambia. Indeed farmers often use fire as a means of burning off old vegetation prior to planting a new crop. But a bush fire, whether controlled or "wild" does not always pose the threat to wildlife that one might expect, as this account illustrates. Having satisfied ourselves that the blaze was not threatening the village we concentrated on the f...

Country Eye 41 - Winter 2013 / 2014

http://countryeye.org.uk/CountryEye41Winter1314.htm

Click on the images for a larger picture). Every winter seems to be different and although the transition from autumn to winter was not marked in terms of temperature, the story so far has been of storms lashing our islands. As I write in mid January many homes and businesses are flooded especially in the Thames valley and the Somerset levels. Grey Seal Pup With Mum. A similar sized wader, but one that is far more common on our shores is the very pale and endearing Sanderling. Normally seen feeding a...

Many of our smaller passerines are seriously declining. Are Turtle Doves on the same path to extinction as their lost relative the Passenger Pigeon? Despite having enjoyed t...

Country Eye - Flora and Fauna of Rippingale

http://countryeye.org.uk/FloraAndFauna.htm

Flora and Fauna of Rippingale. In 1999 I was approached by Rippingale Parish Council for help in providing information on wildlife of the village and surrounding countryside for a board to be placed on the village green to mark the millennium. My idea was to use the churchyard with its rich and abundant flora as the main focus and radiate out from that taking in some of the more familiar birds and animals as well as specialities such as Barn Owls.

Country Eye 38 - Spring 2013

http://countryeye.org.uk/CountryEye38Spring13.htm

Click on the images for a larger picture). After last year's dreadfully wet summer and a relatively cold winter, the last thing we wanted was a late, cold spring - but that is exactly what we got! Snowdrops were still in bloom in my garden in the middle of April with little else in flower and as I write on the last day in April the hedgerows are just coming in to leaf. So what impact has the late spring had on our wildlife? I heard alarming reports from the North Sea coast of hundreds, possibly thousands...

Again, without failure, these patterns are incredible. Back to the Hot Stuff - this would be a great gift for all of your family and friends.
