Big Red Clydesdale: December 2014
http://bigredclydesdale.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Monday, 29 December 2014. Late December Warm Spell. Late December brought us some unseasonably warm weather. No kidding, we had a green Christmas for the first time in many years. It's not great weather for my ice bike with its studded tires but it was a great excuse to pull out my hybrid. It's also a great escape from the concrete jungle. Scenic views of the river and wetlands that help you forget about the rat r...

Big Red Clydesdale: October 2014

A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Monday, 27 October 2014. Project SubZero Update 2. All set up and ready to go! I had ordered Dave's Mud Shovel front. They're normally used on fat bikes. But I was considering wider rims (just not fat-bike wide) and I wanted to make sure to contain the icy carnage being thrown at me. PDW Origami Front Fender. To see how it would do. I'm not sure if I will bring in the rear one, you can't get Origami rear fenders.

Big Red Clydesdale: August 2014

A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Thursday, 28 August 2014. The results of your A1C. I know the news is a bit shocking. The good news is we identified it and now. Did you just say I have diabetes? I got a wealth of information from a diabetes educational center. I learned that I had a lot of misconceptions about the disease and ways I could eat better. I started walking a lot and eventually got on the road with my hybrid. I forgot how much I loved cyc...

Big Red Clydesdale: Touring the Counties Part One
http://bigredclydesdale.blogspot.com/2015/05/touring-counties-part-one.html
A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Sunday, 31 May 2015. Touring the Counties Part One. I had several distance goals this year and was looking for a way to build up to them. I was hoping to get a few metric centuries in by the end of June, a 170km ride in July and a 200km ride in August. When I started to plan my rides, I realized I had access to a lot of great riding right in the united counties where I live. My next stop was a tiny spot right next to ...

Big Red Clydesdale: November 2014

A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Wednesday, 26 November 2014. Android Apps for Cycling. Sometimes I feel like the best modern invention for cycling is the smart phone. When I re-ignited my passion for cycling, I had an Android phone. I was hoping there would be a program that could make use of the phone's sensors and give me a good guess as to my speed. Today I have a variety of apps that enhance my cycling experience. Activity was indoors (no GPS).

Big Red Clydesdale: August 2015
http://bigredclydesdale.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Friday, 28 August 2015. Last year most of my rides were solo rides. When I wasn't solo, it was usually a leisure ride with my spouse. In my mind, cycling was a very solitary activity. Living in the sticks means you don't often see cyclists, familiar or not. Being in a group literally means safety in numbers. As a lone cyclist, you might be unnoticed by a motor vehicle. But a pack of cyclists is very noticeable...When ...

Big Red Clydesdale: January 2015
http://bigredclydesdale.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Thursday, 29 January 2015. Winter Wisdom: Clothing and Layers. When the temperature plunges to sub-zero temperatures, your primary concern should be staying warm. The cold isn't just some sort of discomfort; you can die from exposure to cold weather. This is why it is very important to wear the right kind of clothing, in the right amount. Experienced winter cyclists layer their clothing. My base layer almost always ha...

Big Red Clydesdale: Winter Success
http://bigredclydesdale.blogspot.com/2015/04/winter-success.html
A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Sunday, 19 April 2015. Despite a few late snow falls, I think it's safe to say that winter is behind us (us as in people living in my area, at any rate). With that in mind I thought I'd reflect a bit on the success I had with my winter plans. Originally I had several options:. Get a trainer and join a local class. Try out outdoor winter cycling with studded tires. Get rollers to ride at home. I feel like I developed t...

Big Red Clydesdale: My First Group Ride
http://bigredclydesdale.blogspot.com/2015/05/my-first-group-ride.html
A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Tuesday, 19 May 2015. My First Group Ride. I've been a notorious loner for most of my cycling exploits. Sometimes it's due to prevailing weather; I still haven't found someone willing to go biking with me in the winter time. Sometimes it's due to distance; outside of perhaps 2 people, most people I know are casual cyclists that can't fathom riding further than 10 or 15 km in a go. When I heard the paceline was going t...

Big Red Clydesdale: September 2014
http://bigredclydesdale.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
A blog about all things cycling; experiences, reviews and using it to control diabetes. Tuesday, 30 September 2014. My Hybrid, Miele Umbria. A few years ago the cycling bug bit me. I had always enjoyed mountain biking in my youth and I wanted to take it up again. This time around I wanted something street-able but able to hit an easy dirt trail as well. Something upright and something with a flat or riser handle bar. My Miele Umbria, aka The Hybrid. Friday, 26 September 2014. Just In Time for Autumn.
