Cydney P: March 2010

http://www.cydneywithac.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. It wasn’t until reading Little Lord Fauntleroy. That I realized the importance of an author’s gender. In class, we have been so focused on classifying gender roles of characters and children, and have missed the importance of the creators’ genders. Silly me, I assumed that women would write stories about little girls, and stories about little boys were created by men. Obviously, Little Lord Fauntleroy. In many ways, I can see how a female wrote Little Lord Fauntleroy. And by fr...

Cydney P: A Whisper in the Dark

http://www.cydneywithac.blogspot.com/2010/02/whisper-in-dark.html

Wednesday, February 24, 2010. A Whisper in the Dark. In a way, the introduction of insane characters in A Whisper in the Dark. Takes away from the innocent nature of children’s literature, and adds to the gothic aspect of darker ideas. Mental insanity is not a light subject, so it’s not something you would expect to find in children's literature, but maybe children in. The end of A Whisper in the Dark. February 28, 2010 at 10:16 AM. How can you really understand what is going on in the text when you cann...

Cydney P: Adventures of Tom Sawyer

http://www.cydneywithac.blogspot.com/2010/03/adventures-of-tom-sawyer.html

Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Did you ever notice how the girls in each story we read had no friends? And by friends, I don’t mean their mom, or cat, or lamplighter. Throughout the story, Tom Sawyer is surrounded by many children, adding a whole new aspect to children’s literature. Having actual “peers” in a character’s life makes the story brighter and less depressing, even if they are fist fighting. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Cydney P: Ragged Dick

http://www.cydneywithac.blogspot.com/2010/03/ragged-dick.html

Wednesday, March 3, 2010. The fictional representations of young boys is sending a message that their life’s are completely different from young girls, and in a way, they have it better off. In Ragged Dick’s case, we like a boy who is independent, willing to work hard, but still funny, down to earth, and definitely not too emotional; and if he faces a problem? Don’t worry he will be fine. The narrator of Ragged Dick. March 7, 2010 at 4:28 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Cydney P: Uncle Tom's Cabin

http://www.cydneywithac.blogspot.com/2010/02/uncle-toms-cabin.html

Thursday, February 18, 2010. Did children read it? February 21, 2010 at 2:32 PM. I agree, it would stink to be a slave. I think this is the message that Stowe wanted to give her readers. Her audience probably consisted of a lot of people who, like many peoples attitudes today about certain issues, didnt really think too much about slavery. This book showed the effect that slavery had on people and made people relate to slaves emotions. February 21, 2010 at 2:33 PM. Ps Im from Austin nice picture.

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Gilman and Chopin

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/04/gilman-and-chopin.html

Monday, April 5, 2010. We've spent a lot of time this semester discussing authorship- what it means to be an author vs. a writer, how gender constructs our idea of an author, and how some authors become "major" while others remain "minor"- which has been both fruitful and engaging. But now I'd like to turn our discussion to an element of literature that doesn't receive a whole lot of attention: the reader. Look for more details? Or are your reading habits exactly the same? Welcome to our English 20503 cl...

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Little Lord Fauntleroy

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/little-lord-fauntleroy.html

Tuesday, March 23, 2010. We had a great beginning discussion of Frances Hodgson Burnett's Little Lord Fauntleroy. In class today, and I'd like to continue it here on our blogs. I did a little definitive research, and it turns out that. Frances Hodgson Burnett is, indeed, a female author. I'm reading this text for the first time along with you, and as you know I had been under the impression she was a man! How does a text change when we find out that an author is male or female? And what if we can't tell?

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Tom Sawyer

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/tom-sawyer.html

Tuesday, March 9, 2010. We had an excellent discussion today, and in light of that productive conversation, I'd like to invite you to continue it here. We addressed issues of boyhood, and city vs. country, and North vs. South. We also talked about national parenting, which can transcend just Twain's text to include others from this semester. Please select a passage from Tom Sawyer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to Major American Writers. Resources in American Literature.

Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Optional Extra Credit Blog

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/04/optional-extra-credit-blog.html

Monday, April 19, 2010. Optional Extra Credit Blog. In this final, optional, extra credit blog, please compare "Sissy" to one of our other primary text this semester. We discussed on Thursday how "Sissy" complicates our prescriptive thinking, so you may consider exploring this in your blog posting. But you are welcome to use any kind of compare/contrast construction you'd like. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Welcome to Major American Writers. Resources in American Literature. Major American Writers Blog, Spring 2010: Nineteenth-Century Children's Periodicals

http://irvin20503spring.blogspot.com/2010/03/nineteenth-century-childrens.html

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. I mentioned in class that in addition to novels, there was a wealth of children's periodicals (think Highlights. And The Youth's Companion. These publications were wildly successful, and you'll find short stories from many of the authors we've encountered this semester. We'll do some work to find these next week when we meet with the Humanities librarian, but if you'd like to do some work now, these titles should aid your search. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
