Texas and The SW. We choose a British produced 1975 Land Rover Series III. It had a 4 cylinder 2.25 liter 73 HP gasoline engine. The 4 speed manual transmission was equipped with 2 additional 4WD speeds. Designed for off-road transportation in Africa, it was widely used across the world. Reliable and simple to repair it employed easily available parts. One of my assignments was to keep a trip journal to record our adventures.

Texas and The SW. Journal entries October 1975. Canyon de Chelly, AZ. We entered New Mexico and got off I-40. We drove north, through a flat grassland desert, direction Santa Fe'. My dad responded; "We came to visit the village." Another guy said "Village closed" and the third native said "Come back tomorrow." The fourth man said nothing. He looked he already had had way too much "fire water". Texas and The SW. Taos Pueblo, NM. Why do you always have to take us to places like this?

Texas and The SW. Journal entries October 1975. After a quick visit to the Ranger's office, my dad surprised us by scheduling a tour of the canyon with our car. The next morning our Navajo guide met us at the Ranger's office. The resemblance with the old man we had met at Taos Pueblo was unbelievable.
