Deb's Scientific Adventures

Monday, 25 May 2015. In the holidays I went to a three day wananga (conference) in Whananaki which is a very pretty little town north of Whangarei (north of Auckland). We stayed on a marae. There were scientists, some teachers and other people who were interested in protecting our rivers and seas. We learned about marine reserves (places where the sea life is protected from fishing), wetlands, water quality and green turtles! We also practised looking at the health of a stream:. Just like you do). I am a...

Deb's Scientific Adventures: Nature Sanctuaries

http://www.debsscientificadventureslepperton.blogspot.com/2015/05/nature-sanctuaries.html

Monday, 25 May 2015. I have been very lucky to have visited two nature sanctuaries this month. This one is very close to the centre of Wellington. This is part of the predator-proof fence which goes right around the sanctuary. This fence means that our endangered birds and reptiles can be kept safe and breed so that one day they may not be endangered anymore. Volunteers spend thousands of hours walking the fence line to make sure there are no holes or that trees haven't fallen across. This is takahe poo!

Deb's Scientific Adventures: More Wellington Science

http://www.debsscientificadventureslepperton.blogspot.com/2015/05/more-wellington-science.html

Monday, 25 May 2015. 35 primary and secondary teachers have been selected from around New Zealand to be part of the Royal Society programme which is put together to help us to develop science in our schools. Here are some of the things we do when we get together. These change colour in the sun! Just like you do). We looked at the different phases of the moon. This is how a volcanic crater is formed! Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? I can't wait to try some of these things at school!

Deb's Scientific Adventures: March 2015

http://www.debsscientificadventureslepperton.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, 19 March 2015. Two Community Snorkel days were held at Nga Motu Beach. Nearly 100 people took the opportunity to pick up some snorkelling skills. Wetsuits, masks, snorkels and fins were provided and small groups went out with an experienced snorkeler. There were free sausages afterwards! It was great to see some Lepperton families at the event! We put our gear on before we get in the sea so that we don't lose it. These guys were there to make sure everyone was safe. Tuesday, 3 March 2015. As pa...

Super Science at Wanaka Primary: Tracking Tunnels

http://wanakascience.blogspot.com/2015/04/tracking-tunnels.html

Super Science at Wanaka Primary. Sunday, April 19, 2015. I have been working up at Macraes Field Base recently - last week we had A LOT of snow and got snowed in! Luckily the snow cleared away by Thursday and I was able to get out and do my work. I was working on checking the tracking tunnels in the reserve predator-proof enclosures. We use the tracking tunnels to make sure there are no animals we don't want in the enclosures e.g. rats, mice, stoats etc - predators. While I was checking the tunnels I saw...

Super Science at Wanaka Primary: March 2015

http://wanakascience.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Super Science at Wanaka Primary. Sunday, March 29, 2015. I do some of my field work up in the Mokomoko Dryland Sanctuary, near Alexandra. This is a small predator fenced area. Several grand and Otago skinks were released into this area and some of my work is searching for them to see if they are still there! When we find a skink we have to try to get some photos of them - which is easier said than done! Ideally we would get a side-on photo of each side of the skink. Is it A, B or C? How about this one?

Super Science at Wanaka Primary. Sunday, May 3, 2015. It's National Science Week this week and the theme is Light! This theme was chosen because it is the International Year of Light. Who knows what our main source of light is? Is it something else? Light comes in many different forms - there is white light - which is the visible light we can see, but there are also other types of light - one of these is UV light. UV is the light that causes sunburn but you can't see the it. Have a look at this video:.

HiYA to You All! SALSA IS MY PASSION. AND I WANT TO SHARE IT WITH YOU. I love cooking it, cooking with it and sharing it. The need to find a salsa without onions began this journey. Ingredients were tossed in a pot and the results were delish. Friends and family agreed and suggested I bottle and sell it and then encouraged me to pursue taking the salsa to market. With the help of many people, I brought Deb’s Salsa to market in less than a year from when I started making it. Use it in your. 12 or More Jars.
