Steve and Kylie Harris. Steve was born and bred in Decanter Bay and farmed around 900 acres with Kylie for 30 years. Kylie came from Sydney. Both have a wealth of local knowledge and are happy to pass that on. Steve’s family (the Menzies family) have farmed the area since 1878. Steve and Kylie’s three sons have left the Peninsula and have families of their own. The farm was sold a few years ago but the bach and homestead retained by Steve and Kylie.

Enjoy the Kiwi dream - a bach, cosy and unpretentious, nestled in the curve of an exquisite private bay. A safe sandy beach only meters away, a dramatic view, abundant seafood and perfect peace - this is Decanter Bay. The beach is sandy except for approx 2 hours either side of high tide. It is a very safe swimming beach and an excellent childrens beach for crab hunting, seaweed and driftwood gathering and building sandcastles. Mussels and paua (abalone) can be gathered by seafood lovers.

The bach is situated in the prime spot in the bay being just over 20 metres from high tide. It enjoys stunning views over the beach and down the bay. Built in 1980, it is small but not pokey and is well insulated. There are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and the other with two sets of bunks, therefore sleeping 6. There is a kitchen/living room, bathroom and toilet. There is also a large sunny deck. It has a log fire with firewood supplied. Smokers are expected to smoke outside. You will need to bring:.

Decanter Bay, approximately an hour’s drive from the outskirts of Christchurch, is a small semi- isolated bay on the northern side of Banks Peninsula, 5 minutes to the north of Little Akaloa. These bays are known as the Eastern Bays. The bay faces north and is open to the sea which gives it many moods from large swells and waves to gentle calm. Akaroa, Banks Peninsula’s best known tourist town with shops and restaurants is 35 minutes drive from Decanter Bay.
