Dermot Breen's Blog: December 2014

http://dermotbreen.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, 28 December 2014. Clifden Cuvier's Beaked Whale. I got a text about a whale on Clifden beach on Christmas Day. I was back in Offaly over Christmas so I only had a chance to have a look at it today. It's male Cuvier's Beaked Whale measuring just over five metres in length. There have been five strandings of the species in Ireland now within the last month. This is a very high number to show up within such a short time period. Http:/ www.iwdg.ie/index.php? Dermot Breen's Blog: First-year male breeding Merlin

http://dermotbreen.blogspot.com/2015/07/first-year-male-merlin.html

Wednesday, 8 July 2015. First-year male breeding Merlin. The male can be aged as a young bird by the newly moulted adult male-type black inner primaries contrasting with the old brown outer primaries and new grey scapulars, rump and tail although these aren't too easy to see in these crap shots. Female Merlin tend to nest for the first time earlier than males. Two different studies put the average age of first breeding of female Merlin at 1.3. Years and 1.3 ±. 01 and 1.9 ±. Inishdawros 22nd July 2015.

Dermot Breen's Blog: Inishark 7th & 8th May 2015

http://dermotbreen.blogspot.com/2015/05/inishark-7th-8th-may-2015.html

Sunday, 10 May 2015. Inishark 7th and 8th May 2015. Given the extent and height of the cliffs it wasn't possible to confirm breeding on this occasion unfortunately but I have no doubt that the female was sat tight incubating eggs. Bonxie with the mainland in the background. Hooded Crow sitting on the old church. Common Guillemots and Kittiwakes. Male Blackbird collecting food, only one pair on the entire island. Dead first-winter Iceland Gull, Inishbofin. Dead Raven inside one of the abandoned houses.

TT's Birding Blog: Redpoll

http://ttbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/redpoll.html

Saturday, 4 April 2015. An interesting looking Redpoll turned up in my back garden in Monaleen, Limerick last Sunday, 29/3/2015. It stood out from the usual Redpolls Carduelis flammea cabaret. That come in to feed on the niger seed that gets spilt from the feeders by the visiting Goldfinches. It had a colder cast to it's plumage and was noticeably bigger (approaching Goldfinch size) and bulkier. It also tended to keep to itself when feeding and coming and going from the garden. TT's Birding Blog: Yellow-browed Warbler

http://ttbirding.blogspot.com/2014/10/yellow-browed-warbler.html

Wednesday, 1 October 2014. I made the long trip down to Mizen Head in west Cork last Sunday (Sept. 28th) in the hope of seeing the Ovenbird that was found there the previous evening. Unsurprisingly the bird did not show, however this Yellow-browed Warbler that was found nearby provided some measure of reward for the long trip. It was a very bright and well marked individual, a fine bird on a nice day! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Birder and occasional photographer. View my complete profile.

TT's Birding Blog: June 2013

http://ttbirding.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, 9 June 2013. I paid a few visits to the Coonagh Nature Reserve in late May and early June to see if the improving weather conditions and easterly airflow would deliver any new migrants. Things were generally quiet on the migrant front though I did come across a pale looking Redpoll on the river bank at the southern end of the site on May 25th. Redpoll ©Tom Tarpey. A Midlands Birder - tales from the lakeshore and beyond! An occasional blog on birding my local patch in the Irish midlands and sometimes farther afield, or sometimes just an " ad lib" about what's happening in (and to) our natural environment!
