And to have one in our yard- fantastic! I had to take the picture through the screen door so as not to alarm it which is why it is especially lousy. Urban homesteading at 5,000 feet. Saturday, August 14, 2010. Well, it's official. I've become a crazy chicken lady. Sure we only have 3 hens, but one of them is currently residing in our kitchen. She can't take the heat outdoors and seems so much happier inside. She's in an enclosure with straw, food and water and extra calcium, so I think she's pretty cozy. She also gets first dibs at any kitchen scraps. You can see in this picture just how pathetic she looks and how much she needs. To be indoors, right?

It was Just A Couple Of Chickens. The book cover was worn by Andrew Hunt, who is a main character in the book. And who is my husband, and who was riding the "E" bike of the Love Bikes on the stunning night bike ride through the streets of downtown Portland. Andrew was wearing the book cover. Or much at all.
