Gift Shop and Kristkindl Markt. Weinachtsfest, a traditional German Christmas celebration, is held annually the first two weekends of December at Deutschheim State Historic Site. Hours for this free event are 10:00 to 4:00, Saturday and Sunday. On Weihnachtsfest weekends, the Pommer-Gentner House is decorated with greenery and lit by lamplight. Deutschheim's four-square Gemusegarten is planted with heirloom varieties, just as 19th century German immigrants would have done, incorporating flowers among the vegetables for both beauty and practicality. So much of today's organic methods are very old traditions that were abandoned in the 20th century, says Deutschheim Administrator Cynthia Browne. Gift Shop and Kristkindl Markt. Built in 1840 for Caroline Pommer, the Pommer-Gentner house is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Hermann. The splendid brick dwelling, executed in the German neoclassical style, is furnished to reflect the life of a prosperous merchant in the 1830s and 1840s. The Pommer and Gentner families were among the original founders of Hermann. The Pommers had been makers of fine piano-fortes in Philadelphia, one of which is now displayed at the Smithsonian.
