How Disney Saved the Fairy Tale. An Afternoon with Alice CFP →. So long, Sir Terry Pratchett, and thank you for Granny Weatherwax. March 13, 2015. Today was an odd day to teach Speculative Fiction. No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away…. Granny Weatherwax by Paul Kidby. 8221; So tonight I’m going to curl up with a Grann...

An Afternoon with Alice: June 13, 2015. The Female Gaze and Fairy Tales →. June 29, 2015. It’s been a busy few weeks! The Alice Salon at the Glen Eira Storytelling Festival was fantastic fun. My co-conspirators put together the most wonderful tea party and publication displays and we had a great selection of music and papers. She was joined by her merry, colourful band including a rather intrepid white rabbit child and a surprise appearance by a bunyip! And this time I didn’t have the ‘flu! We also heard...

October 25, 2016. When I saw Inkgypsy’s. Once Upon a Time. On fairy-tale mixtapes (inspired by Adam’s fantastic take. On Andrew Lang), could I resist? Of course, the problem is that I could easily have listed all d’Aulnoy’s tales, but I have tried to restrain myself to a few key favourites. I’m sure I’d reorder this and swap out tales, but I do have a pile of grading to sort through, so I think this will have to be a ‘quickie’! Finette Cendron, Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy. Viola, Giambattista Basile. Just t...
Why I Liked Branagh’s Cinderella | Doc In Boots

An Afternoon with Alice CFP. Research and Mrs Exeter →. Why I Liked Branagh’s Cinderella. March 30, 2015. Last week as part of Hoyt’s ‘Girls’ Night Out’ promotion, which was rather perfect, really. It’s a very girly film! Is that a bad thing? I’ve been fielding many questions from people about the film, about Disney princesses, about the anti-princess movement. I read Judy Berman’s post about the film on Flavorwire. This morning. I read. On the film last week. There seems to be a consensus that. Because ...

Sunday, 30 June 2013. Good Paper, Crappy Paper, Large Paper etc. I have been examining eighteenth-century auction catalogues and was puzzled by an abbreviation I found in one of them: "Ch. opt." After a lot of faffing about online I established only that this was an abbreviation of "Chart. opt."—which my little Latin suggested was Paper Best [optima/optimal]. What isn't clear is what exactly this implied beyond "best." Thomas Frognall Dibdin writes ( here. Charta cacata = crappy paper or toilet paper.

Thursday, 26 February 2015. On this page I plan on memorialising some of the negative, dismissive, outrageous and idiotic statements made about Eliza Haywood and her (actual or putative) works. (I have already discussed Haywood's reputation before the twentieth century, and collected together some of the more positive statements made about Haywood here. Jonathan Swift [letter dated 26 October 1731], in Letters to and from Henrietta, Countess of Suffolk. 1824), 2.29 ( here. In The Monthly Review. The prod...

On an eighteenth-century printer's ornament design, which appears in two ornaments by Thomas Gardner (T03 and T04; used 1735–56) and another used by T. Saint in 1785. Printed for Benjamin Motte. Doc In Boots | not your usual ivory tower
Not your usual ivory tower. The Female Gaze and Fairy Tales. August 5, 2015. The male gaze is a fixture of cinema and, to an extent, of literature. Women, more often than not, experience storytelling through a masculine perspective. However, the female gaze does exist and it’s a wonderful thing. Lately I’ve been encountering examples. I’m working on my own take on the female gaze in Disney, so I was highly amused by a recent. Post, “ This is What Disney Princes Would Look Like in Real Life. 1997) as an e...
