The Kind of Face You Hate: April 2015
http://wwwbillblog.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 27, 2015. Where Shall I Go When I Go Where I Go? Back in 2001, a massive volume that had been first published in the UK the year before was put out by the now defunct Talk Miramax books. Coming in at around 1,200 pages, the book was The Letters of Kingsley Amis. Edited by Zachary Leader. As I remember it, the reaction to this book was a mixture of "How interesting" and "What? Response to Leader's apparent refusal to let Amis sink out of memory prevailed. Listen, Lucky Jim. And The Old Devils.

The Kind of Face You Hate: June 2015
http://wwwbillblog.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2015. The Kind of Face You Whaaaaaaa! And those who did read them seemed to like them. I found this very flattering and gratifying, and every year I looked forward to expanding my knowledge about one of my favorite genres. I was forced to think about horror on a level that I wouldn't have had I been merely(! Reading these books and stories for pleasure. If my blog was ever going to have any sort of legacy, which I would have to say I kind of doubt it will. However, what I am. Posts in, ...

Saturday, February 28, 2015. The Cronenberg Series Part 18: All the Flesh That Says Yes. About a quarter of the way into Maps to the Stars. Here) set in Hollywood the plot of which, or a portion of the plot of which, revolves around, or rather in the vicinity of, the making of another film, one which is the remake of another. Film thereby providing a link to Old Hollywood, something which is always an important part of these things - upon hearing this crass joke, as I say, the viewer of Maps to the Stars.

The Kind of Face You Hate: December 2014
http://wwwbillblog.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Sunday, December 28, 2014. The Best Books I Read in 2014? Novels from 2014. Unprecedented! For example, I think you all have probably already heard about that one by now. Seven Footprints to Satan. By A Merritt - Probably best known for Creep, Shadow! His final novel from 1934, this novel, Merritt's fourth from 1927, is remembered more for the 1929 film adaptation directed by Benjamin Christensen, who also made Haxan. This is a somewhat confusing question) novel as "strange." Also "misleading," imply...

The Kind of Face You Hate: January 2015
http://wwwbillblog.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 26, 2015. Speaking about Argentinian literature, Jorge Luis Borges once said "Silvina Ocampo is one of our best writers. Her stories have no equal in our literature." I learned this from the back cover of the new NYRB Classics edition. Of Ocampo's selected stories called Thus Were Their Faces. Borges' enthusiasm wasn't based on nothing. The contents of Thus Were Their Faces. Is "Men Animals Vines" from her 1970 collection Days of Night. At night there are fireflies and deafening cicadas&#...

The Kind of Face You Hate: Kill Cagliostro!
http://wwwbillblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/kill-cagliostro.html
Tuesday, July 28, 2015. Leave it to Jess Franco, then, to think "What the hell, I'll give it a whirl." Hence The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein. Cagliostro believes that by mating the monster with a beautiful naked woman (the specific identity of whom is TBD), he will create the beginnings of a master race. And he's probably right about that, because he he seems to know his stuff. In a race to stop him, Franco introduces, among others, a character, or character name, from Dracula. I read this. (As I am...

The Kind of Face You Hate: The Kind of Face You Shoot: It Seemed That the City Was Dying
http://wwwbillblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-kind-of-face-you-shoot-it-seemed.html
Tuesday, August 4, 2015. The Kind of Face You Shoot: It Seemed That the City Was Dying. In 1938, the British writer Gerald Kersh came up with perhaps the most quintessentially noir title before noir as we define it even began when he published his now classic novel Night and the City. Well some people wrote books like that, too! As if they were almost very respectable novelizations and not the originators. My argument has also been, when it comes to the cinematic noir style, that if you read the book...

Saturday, March 21, 2015. This Must End - Part Three. Part One is here. Part Two is here. Still hadn’t made it home, and his head was filled with a terrible rumbling. He was long off the bus, and had long ago sought a wobbly iron mesh table and sharp iron mesh chair, one set among a scattered many along the sidewalk across the street from the zoo, from which, too, there came a rumbling. Of hunger,. 8220;It’s a good book,” the moron said. 8220;I’m sorry? 8221; he finally said. Now finally looked at. T...

Thursday, October 31, 2013. The Kind of Face You Slash - Day 31: Striking a Few Villainous Chords. The attempts of mechanicians to imitate, with more or less approximation to accuracy, the human organs in the production of musical sounds, or to substitute mechanical appliances for those organs, I consider tantamount to a declaration of war against the spiritual element in music; but the greater the forces they array against it, the more victorious it is. From "Automata" by E. T. A. Hoffmann. Of course, n...
