Skip to main content. About Driftwood and Sand. Driftwood and Sand began as a community beach sculpture event in 2004. It was conceived by local artist Donald Buglass. He saw the driftwood-strewn beach as a fabulous creative opportunity, offering the raw materials and the inspiration for a community art celebration - a sculpture competition with a difference. Every year he is commissioned to build a large signature piece to inspire other artists. 2007 guest judge Auckland artist Caroline Robinson.

Skip to main content. There's plenty on offer at the Hokitika beach during the week of Driftwood and Sand. Enter the BEACH SCULPTURE competition to win great prizes including $300 cash. Watch the beach transform to an outdoor art gallery - great photo opportunities. Take part in art workshops and other activities. Kids can build a house in Goldrush Town - an homage to Hokitika's early goldrush settlers. Don't miss the prizegiving on Sunday 29th January at 2pm! Wednesday 25th of Jan. Paper, Scissors, Fish!

Skip to main content. In 2017 Driftwood and Sand is running between Wednesday 25th and Sunday 29th January. Prize giving will be at 2pm on Sunday 29th January. As always the venue is Hokitika beach, just opposite the main shopping area. Any registered sculpture made from beach material is eligible for prizes. Fixings are allowed but must be kept to a minimum and removed later. No dangerous or poisonous substances are allowed. No glass. 5 Junior entry (under 16).
