September 13, 2010. Over the weekend we went to see Get Low. Duvall as he ages, acts like an old man. I don’t mean this to be glib. His acting is so literally that of a very old, tired and sick old man it’s heart rending. His story, when told, is amazing, and the movie will leave you a bit stunned at the artistry, performances, and the story itself. I thought The Apostle. Or possibly Assassination Tango. Iron Man Part Deux. May 17, 2010. The former literally kicks butt as some kind of hyper secret agent. The latter has never looked prettier, nor seemed as believable. She almost reaches 3 dimensions. Almost. I’m not a comic book (pardon me, illustrated novel) guy, but most of the movies I’ve seen that come out of Marvel Comics are great eye and spirit candy. I hope you get to see Iron Man 2. Bernard and Doris, The American, and the Fantastic Mr. Fox. September 10, 2010. This is a very European movie. Lots of pretty pictures, long stretches of little or very small action, conspiracies, some nekkidness, a little violence. During the showing the power went out in the theater and I heard a woman behind us say, I didn’t know we were coming to a silent movie. Her friend said, They certainly didn’t spend much on dialog. Not him sorry ladies. Finally, I just needed to see The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Chaos, Blind Side, and the Million Dollar Quartet. August 24, 2010. I went to a play. I did and there were actors and lights and all the play-stuff that you’d expect. I was in Chicago with my Squeeze and we went to see The Million Dollar Quartet. The Apollo Theater. To show what a dork I am, I was expecting soul music it was the Apollo, wasn’t it? Unlike DFW's prose, which springs out of some sort of manic obsession, Roth is so controlled, much like the exterior of the Swede's ideal life. As the lives of the Levovs spin out of control, Roth's prose loosens and seems to wander, but Roth is still in control of every word. This is good writing, and you can feel it. This is one of those books - like Le Petit Prince. The Sun Also Rises. To be honest, this is one of those books that doesn't have much of a plot; it's just a bunch of ex-pat Americans running around 1920s Europe (mostly Spain) drinking their pain away, not really saying what they ought or want to say to each other. Lots of repressed feelings in this one.
