Taiwan Tales

Thursday, February 10, 2011. For Chinese New Year we were given 6 days break. I had wanted to go to Toroko Gorge but I had left it a bit late to book a place to stay and it was still a bit cold for camping. Angel's family had invited me to a big feast on the day after we broke up. I had been trying to find out what I should bring for everyone for some time, but Angel hadn't been very specific. I'm sure the beer will keep until his birthday! We passed on this idea as it made it difficult to see the flower...

Taiwan Tales: Halloween

http://duncanjsmith.blogspot.com/2010/11/halloween.html

Tuesday, November 23, 2010. To celebrate all things hallowed, the school was decorated with bats, pumpkins and a huge vampire across the window. In the weeks leading up to Halloween, all of the students were taught the catchy phrase "Trick or treat, I'm so sweat. Give me something good to eat! The week before, they had all made scary masks in class but these were nothing compared to the costumes the kids came in. Cowgirls, fairies, witches, werewolves. they were all there! Taiwan Tales: A Shaney Christmas!

http://duncanjsmith.blogspot.com/2011/01/shaney-christmas.html

Wednesday, January 05, 2011. A few weeks before Christmas the TAs. Spent a couple of weekends decorating the entrance of the building. This involved 8 people spending 12 hours making by hand: a Christmas tree in one window with a Santa Claus popping out a chimney. Three snowmen on the other window, a few thousand snowflakes bordering the windows, and two dozen stars hanging from the ceiling and a Christmas greeting. On top of that there was a real fake. Selling stocking shaped candy bags. It. In the midd...

Taiwan Tales: New Year 100

http://duncanjsmith.blogspot.com/2011/01/new-year-100.html

Wednesday, January 05, 2011. On New Years Eve, I was encouraged to finish class on time for a change to give the TAs. On Saturday we woke up fairly early and scootered. Down on Tin Tin's scooter to the train station to catch a train to Taichung. There we changed onto a shuttle bus to Sun Moon Lake, where we had booked a hotel for the weekend. The drive was smooth and before we knew it, we were on the edge of the lake in Shuishe. Then I clicked through with my left thumb and OUCH! Don't use your thumb&#46...

Taiwan Tales: June 2006

http://duncanjsmith.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 18, 2006. Sun Moon Lake Rain. Crazy kids do the Sun Moon Lake. The crazy travellers prepare for the journey. After over 2 hours drive the lake came into view; a clear bright blue despite the fading sun and total cloud cover: must have a sulphur contamination. I was pleased to find I was still dry knee up and neck down; until I lifted my arm an sent a pool of water that had collected in my sleeve down my sides. The lakeside village with ample scooter room Sun Moon Lake by moonlight. Well; hav...

Taiwan Tales: October 2006

http://duncanjsmith.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 17, 2006. Today was Rita’s wedding part one. The part where the groom’s immediate family come to the brides house and meet the bride’s immediate family for a gathering and then moving on to restaurant for a meal with well everyone that knows the bride. The second part is with only the grooms family and friends and the bride’s close family. This includes the actually ‘marriage’ part. I think this system is a great idea as you get twice the food than in most Western weddings. I also handed...

Man About Taiwan: September 2004

If anyone was wondering what Taiwan looks like from the air, then this link I found thanks to Stodgy White Guy. Will make an impression. I personally think this is the best shot of Taiwan I've seen. I live in the middle bit, not too far from the mountains, which run the centre of Taiwan. Posted by Martin Coyle @ 11:00 pm.

http://mcoyle.blogspot.com/2004_08_01_archive.html

I lived and taught English for two years in Taiwan. I travelled China and the rest of Asia, including South Africa. Now I live in Bristol. Tuesday, August 31. Today I bought my Fuzzy Yamaha scooter. Second hand, seems to be in good condition, costing 18,000 dollars (295 pounds). It's a 125cc (4 stroke), 1994 model with slogan; "Of The Wind Called". In fact most scooters have these little 'Chinglish' slogans. On the Yamaha Duke is; "Set me free - Let me alone". Want to read more slogans:. My Bro and Me.

The Duncan Family

Sunday, June 8, 2014. We had a blast building this playhouse for our kids. It was great to have a project to work on together and we are so happy with the finished product! We have had a few people ask us for our plans, so I just wanted to share what we did. Our House is 42" x 54" (not including the stairs) and 8 ft. tall. The board at the bottom of the door was just used to brace that frame until it was all put together- then it was removed). We found out the hard way not to paint the paneling before yo...

Tales from Cambodia and Vietnam

Tales from Cambodia and Vietnam. Wednesday, May 9, 2007. Touching down in Bangkok international after a stressful couple of weeks selling/mailing my and closing accounts, teaching etc, I finally felt like I was on holiday. It was nice going back to Thailand knowing exactly where to go and how to get around without being conned by taxi drivers telling you there are no buses, or vendors selling water for $3 US. But turned out he wasn't trying to kill us and steal our things. he was smuggling something ...

Friday, 1 August 2008. Bit of foley work that I did for a film called Mr Self Destruct that didn't get finished. This is an edited soundtrack for the Election 2 trailer. The original trailer was taken and then the soundtrack edited with additional sound effects added. Taken from the Album 'Mcarthy'. This style using a children's keyboard and melodica. The Ambience was recorded at a nearby park to capture the children's playgro. This is a Plasma Gun sound effect done for Evolution Mod. And Card Kick String.
