East Sussex Wanderer: October 2016

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Saturday, 29 October 2016. I love the seasonal changes that are a signature of natural Britain and Autumn has a beauty all of it's own. However, walking across Pevensey Levels yesterday in temperatures of 17 degrees under a clear blue sky and with just a gentle breeze, it felt like summer was trying to hold on for a while longer. We saw four freshly emerged Clouded Yellows on the wing. Shaggy Ink Cap (. Tuesday, 25 October 2016.

East Sussex Wanderer: July 2016

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Saturday, 23 July 2016. A Wealden Wood in July. By July, all the summer woodland species of butterfly that occur in East Sussex are on the wing and it is a joy to watch the majestic Silver-washed Fritillary (. And elegant White Admiral (. Flying along the woodland edges. This is also the time of year that I go looking for the Purple Hairstreak (. A male basking in the lower branches of an oak tree. Longhorn sp. (. A close relati...

East Sussex Wanderer: A Dragonfly Oddity

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2016/11/a-dragonfly-oddity_8.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Tuesday, 8 November 2016. Last week, I managed to enjoy a couple of sunny mild days on Rye Levels before temperatures started to tumble. Although there were still two or three butterflies about, my attention was drawn to a very different looking Common Darter (. That was flying in a sunny corner with several others. When it landed, I could see that it was an over-mature female whose wings differed from the norm. The Purple Hairs...

East Sussex Wanderer: Common Frog

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2016/12/common-frog.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Wednesday, 21 December 2016. Whilst at work in the wood at the weekend, I came across a Common Frog (. Moving about in the damp leaf litter. Although they hibernate over winter (either in water or on land), land based hibernators can become active during mild weather. This particular individual was very rotund and had either been feasting on slugs or it could be a female with ready developed spawn. View my complete profile.

East Sussex Wanderer: A Walk in the Wood

http://eastsussexwanderer.blogspot.com/2016/11/a-walk-in-wood.html

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Monday, 21 November 2016. A Walk in the Wood. Saturday morning was cold and bright and my intention was to spend a few hours coppicing and thinning in the wood. After an hour, the spark plug on the chainsaw failed and with no spare, I decided to pack the tools away for another day and enjoy a slow walkabout through the trees. This is a species of Puffball or Earthball; possibly a Scaly Earthball (. View my complete profile.

Bobs Butterfly Blog: Blue Morning, Dusky Middle and Ruff Afternoon.

http://bobsbutterflies.blogspot.com/2015/08/blue-morning-dusky-middle-and-ruff.html

Saturday, 8 August 2015. Blue Morning, Dusky Middle and Ruff Afternoon. A really busy day yesterday with an early start where I was hoping to get some images of the female Chalkhill Blue. The first of the females I found was an aberrant form postobsoleta. Although the ab. was very nice it wasn't as fresh as I was hoping for so it was great to spot a perfect specimen shortly after. Another Wall Brown warming up also gave itself up for a photo. Chalkhill Blue ab. postobsoleta. View my complete profile.

Bobs Butterfly Blog: Helleborines and Brown Hairstreak.

http://bobsbutterflies.blogspot.com/2015/08/helleborines-and-brown-hairstreak.html

Friday, 7 August 2015. Helleborines and Brown Hairstreak. Matt and I ventured over to West Sussex listening to the cricket and looking for a Helleborine that had been reported that was thought to be the first Sussex Narrow-lipped Helleborine for many years. We managed to find it quite easily but we were not convinced about the species. It is now thought to be a slightly odd Broad-leaved Helleborine. A really good day and the cricket was pretty good too! Bobs Butterfly Blog: June 2015

http://bobsbutterflies.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 30 June 2015. A Dark Green Morning. A couple of days ago I went for a walk over the local Downland hoping to see a good quantity of Dark Green Fritillaries. With light cloud and a bit of a breeze conditions were not perfect but it wasn't long before good numbers were seen. Males were flying low over the tall grass looking for females and although I found a weak flying newly emerged butterfly the wind didn't help to get any decent photos. Dark Green Fritillary in the breeze. Sunday, 28 June 2015.

Bobs Butterfly Blog: Filming Wall Brown.

http://bobsbutterflies.blogspot.com/2015/08/filming-wall-brown.html

Thursday, 13 August 2015. David Attenborough and I have a couple of things in common in as much as we are both interested in Natural History and we both share the same birthday. However, there is certainly no need for him to quake in his boots as far as me taking over from him. If you would like to see this 12 minute film the link is. Although I did take the camera with me photography was not what we were there for, however, Dan did find a large Broom Moth larva on Plantain which was good to see.

Bobs Butterfly Blog: May 2015

http://bobsbutterflies.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Friday, 29 May 2015. Old Red-Eyes is Back. A couple of trips this week to the local waterways has produced some interesting sightings as well as species that I've never managed to get decent pictures of before. First it was back to the Demoiselles and Mayflies, as one can never have too much of these gorgeous creatures! The weather was, as it seems to be at the moment, pretty poor! Mating Red and Black Froghoppers. Another hunter found was a young Raft Spider that was sitting on a pad near the damselflies.

http://bobsbutterflies.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 28 April 2015. A little further along the valley some Brown-tail Moth larvae seen in their larval nest. My first Dragonfly of the year was also seen in the shape of a Hairy Dragonfly. Monday, 27 April 2015. With the weather being a bit up and down over the weekend I had a quick look for more Pupa on Saturday. It was only a quick look and no more were found. A Wall larva seen as well as 2 very small Marbled White larva. These were only just over 1 cm. long. Friday, 24 April 2015. I just hope that...

In search of butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife across East Sussex. Thursday, 12 January 2017. Winter is a quiet time for the amateur entomologist but it is a good time of year to search for eggs of the Brown Hairstreak (.
