British-born Chinese Blog: February 2013

Wednesday, February 27, 2013. What if China and Japan's recent tensions escapated to a war? Relations between China and Japan normally aren't the best, as I'm sure you're aware and recent territorial disputes haven't exactly helped matters. But what would be the global economic impact if the dispute over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands. Were to turn into a full-blown war? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). British-born Chinese Blog: January 2013

Monday, January 14, 2013. Funny Chinese Person alert! His name is Joe Wong and he's very funny. Check out the two videos below. The first is a joke-packed monologue at an American gala dinner and is notable as much for the funny gags as for the slightly suspicious reactions of some in the audience. The second is a shorter appearance on the 'Ellen' chat show. Both are very amusing. See what you think. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Past, present and future from a 'B.B.C.' point of view. Of Science and Handbags: Fat cats and dead rats
http://scienceandhandbags.blogspot.com/2011/04/fat-cats-and-dead-rats.html
Of Science and Handbags. Monday, 4 April 2011. Fat cats and dead rats. Today I went to the first of a two day course titled 'Career Management for Researchers - Broadening Horizons'. The aim of the course is to recognise that with so few academic positions available nationwide, it is necessary for university staff on contract employment (such as yours truly) to think about the transferrable skills we have in order to find permanent employment elsewhere. Memories of a quip from an ex-colleague enters my m...

Of Science and Handbags. Monday, 28 March 2011. The Fukushima nuclear reactor on 16/03/11 (Digital Globe 2). It was reported that the levels of radiation emanating from reactor 2 of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has reached 10 million times that of normal (see The Guardian. Happening so quickly there is precious little time for the relevant authorities to play to the gallery. Posted by Chicki peckpeck. Wednesday, 16 March 2011. British-born Chinese Blog: Side-by-Side: Geography Special!
http://british-chinese.blogspot.com/2012/09/side-by-side-geography-special.html
Thursday, September 06, 2012. This is a slightly different and more complicated Side-by-Side and has taken quite a bit longer to put together. As a bbc who has lived most of his life in London and spent some time in HK, I am fairly familiar with the geography of both places (more so with London than with HK). What I didn't have was any sense of how one place related to the other in terms of scale and distance. What would be the equivalent journey in London? If you place Sheung Wan MTR station (over in we...

British-born Chinese Blog: 'Banana in a Nutshell' - Can Chinese parents still love you if they do things that upset you?
http://british-chinese.blogspot.com/2007/11/banana-in-nutshell-can-chinese-parents.html
Tuesday, November 06, 2007. Banana in a Nutshell' - Can Chinese parents still love you if they do things that upset you? I've been meaning to post about this for a while. Banana in a Nutshell is a short film that I saw on a plane (in fact, I think it was a flight to HK) and I thought it was a really interesting short film that quite a few bbcs can relate to. It's a documentary about a young New Zealand Chinese (NZBC? Yet why would they have worked so hard to provide for her, if not out of love? As for my...

British-born Chinese Blog: Old Hong Kong ID cards to become invalid
http://british-chinese.blogspot.com/2006/12/old-hong-kong-id-cards-to-become.html
Sunday, December 17, 2006. Old Hong Kong ID cards to become invalid. A quick reminder for anyone who still hasn't changed their old HK ID cards to the new Smart ID cards with the chip inside: Please hurry up and do so before your card becomes invalid! Old ID cards for people born between 1943 and 1969 are already invalid. The next batch to become invalid hasn't yet been announced but it will almost certainly affect 'bbcs' born in the 70s. Official government info is here. Was that your Hong Kong ID card?

British-born Chinese Blog: PlayCantonese - a Cantonese playgroup for little ones
http://british-chinese.blogspot.com/2012/11/playcantonese-cantonese-playgroup-for.html
Monday, November 05, 2012. PlayCantonese - a Cantonese playgroup for little ones. Just passing on link to what sounds like a useful playgroup for b.b.c. parents with little ones who are learning Cantonese. PlayCantonese holds a series of events in London introducing babies and toddlers to Cantonese language through songs, rhymes and playing. It sounds like a much needed service! Drop them a line at info@playcantonese.com if you're interested. Cara mengobati asam urat. HK vs UK Statistics.
