Take the Challenge

http://www.eatlocalmilwaukee.org/elcchallenge.html

The Milwaukee Eat Local Challenge is one of many local food challenges. The first Eat Local Challenge effort began in Portland, OR organized by the renowned think tank EcoTrust. Since that time, a grassroots effort of locally organized, independent challenges has sprung up around the nation- with thousands of people around the country participating in their own way to build a better food system. Each year the Milwaukee Eat Local Challenge continues to grow and we hope you’ll be a part of it.

Eating Locally, why eat local?

http://www.eatlocalmilwaukee.org/eatlocal.html

Fresh, locally grown foods don’t just. Delicious they are better for you, your community, and the environment. When you buy local food, you vote with your food dollar. What is Local? Enjoy excellent taste and freshness. Local food is fresher and tastes better than food shipped long distances from other states or countries. And local farmers often cultivate varieties of fruits, veggies, and livestock that are bred for flavor and suitability to our region rather than for uniformity and ability to travel.

http://sustainablenutrition.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 11, 2012. Isn't apple blossom time just so beautiful? Thinking ahead to the fruit these blossoms will create with the help of some pollinator friends and envisioning a time when diverse, heritage apple trees thrive- the rare Milwaukee. Varietal included- its been exciting to plant and distribute some of our region's most endangered apple tree varietals this Spring. Spring is the time for grafting and planting and tending heritage fruit trees. Is hosting a special event tomorrow. For more info...

Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Spinach soaking up some rays. That led me to this. On foraged foods. After a quick onceover today, in my own urban yard, I can find wild garlic mustard (for pesto), purslane and lamb's quarters in the garden (for salads or sauteeing), daylilies (for stuffing with chicken salad), and mulberries (for snacking or baking or canning).all available due to the sun's constant shine. Sustainable Nutrition: August 2012

Friday, August 24, 2012. Local Food Movement—changing our landscape. An afternoon tour of Clockshadow's. Rooftop garden in Milwaukee's 5thWard. Last night, as I enjoyed my simple, yet delicious, Minestrone Soup of locally grown Yellow Eye Beans, red onions, Purple Stripe Garlic, and green cabbage from farm markets, as well as Beaver Dam Peppers, an array of heirloom tomatoes and herbs from my garden, I thought about how rooted the concept of eating locally has become in our culture. Community gardens, ba...

Love for the 414. Newer posts →. April 23, 2013. I’m Asian (specifically Filipino in case you were wondering). So I love rice and noodles, probably more than the average person. So tonight my husband and I needed something quick, so I decided to whip up a simple stir fry containing some of the noodles I love and almost always have on hand at home. The following Yakisoba noodles can be found at your local Asia Mart or Asian Supermarket. Probably in the freezer section. April 21, 2013. A few notes worth hi...

Sustainable Nutrition: April 2012

http://sustainablenutrition.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 19, 2012. Spring is such a beautiful time for good food. The wild—ramps, wild onions, fiddelheads, morels, dandelions, violet blossoms. The cultivated—radishes, pea shoots, asparagus, chives, rhubarb, garlic scapes, tender greens, scallions. That particular green of sunlight on leaves and the scent of fruit blossoms shake us out of hibernation. It’s a wonder that we all don’t succumb to spring fever and skip out of work each fine day to forage and tend and till. To support those intuitions.
