Away From Four Marks. Sunday, 12 July 2015. 10th - 11th July - Pagham Harbour, West Sussex. At this time of year I wasn't expecting too much about, and with the tide low everything will be a long way off as well. As we walked along Mill Lane there were several Gatekeepers about in the road side hedges. These are quite pretty looking butterflies with the orange markings giving them a step up from the ubiquitous Meadow Brown. The tide was a long way out, and as we walked up onto the wall footpath the wind ...

Away From Four Marks: November 2014
http://awayfromfourmarks.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Away From Four Marks. Monday, 3 November 2014. 31st October / 1st November - Pagham Harbour, West Sussex. Once again it was away to Sidlesham for the weekend, however when we booked the weekend back in June we never once believed that the weather would be almost the same as it was then in June! The tide was on the turn, and heading back up the creeks, the sun while unseasonably warm was understandably low in the sky due to the time of year, and this combined to provide some wonderful light. I didn't actu...

Away From Four Marks: August 2014
http://awayfromfourmarks.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Away From Four Marks. Sunday, 31 August 2014. 16th - 17th August - Days 8/9; Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo. We were up again early this morning as we were catching an early flight to Kota Kinabalu. It was overcast and dreary, and as we travelled to the airport it started to rain once again, it looked like a familiar British scene, but a lot warmer. Taking off from Kuching it was possible to see the huge meandering rivers that wind there way through this state. Coming into land there were paddy-fields on t...

http://awayfromfourmarks.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Away From Four Marks. Sunday, 21 September 2014. 20th September - Pagham and Warsash. Time for a break and the chance to find some real water birds, I headed to Pagham Harbour to meet up with Ian, and hopefully find some interesting birds. It was very still and slightly misty, but not cold. On arriving at in the car park I could hear the call of a Great Spotted Woodpecker, and walked around to the discovery zone to see on sitting in the tree behind the feeders. We made our way around to the spit, and the...

Away From Four Marks: January 2014
http://awayfromfourmarks.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Away From Four Marks. Saturday, 18 January 2014. 18th January - Lepe Country Park, Hampshire. It has been there for a long time, and I have watched the reports and seen the photographs, but something in told me it was twitching, something I have not done for years. However with the opportunity this Saturday, and Ian also up for the trip, we decided to go the 40 miles to see the American visitor that was calling Lepe Country Park home for the winter. Finally it flew back to the small island and joined the...

I’ve got one more experience to share from the most recent trip to Costa Rica. I spent about a day at a new facility called the Costa Rica Eco-Observatory. This beautiful property is located in the highly diverse Sarapiquí lowlands, made famous by the La Selva. Biological field station. Two Daves, a father and a son, have created a terrific destination for nature enthusiasts in one of the more popular regions in Costa Rica for ecotourism. November 29, 2012. Away From Four Marks: 18th July - Alice Holt Forest & Thursley Common
http://awayfromfourmarks.blogspot.com/2015/07/18th-july-alice-holt-forest-thursley.html
Away From Four Marks. Monday, 20 July 2015. 18th July - Alice Holt Forest and Thursley Common. After a week of overcast and humid conditions the skies finally cleared Saturday morning just at the right time. Ian and I had decided to try for the Emperor, and were following reports of several being seen in the Straits Inclosure. We arrived in bright sunshine, but with a slight breeze that took some of the warmth away. We walked slowly along the track, scouring the tops of the surrounding Oak Trees for any ...

Away From Four Marks: October 2014
http://awayfromfourmarks.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Away From Four Marks. Monday, 27 October 2014. 24th October - Titchfield Haven. A day out away from Four marks i met up with Ian early morning, the tide was already high despite the fact that it was a 13.00 high tide. It was also quite overcast in complete contrast to the forecast clear skies and sunshine. What sun there was was filtering through the clouds. There were also a large number of jays about, flying across in front of us, in amongst the grass, and perched along with the Stonechats on the fence.

Away From Four Marks: January 2015
http://awayfromfourmarks.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Away From Four Marks. Tuesday, 27 January 2015. 24th January - Sidlesham to Selsey Bill. It did rain over night, but passed through quickly and we were greeted to a wonderful sunrise in the morning. We were woken by the bubbling calls of Curlews in the fields surrounding us. After a wonderful breakfast we were off again, this time heading out through Sidlesham Quay. As we put on our boots in the car park the Blue Tits were twittering in the bushes, a sign that things were a little warmer today. At the vi...

Away From Four Marks: February 2014
http://awayfromfourmarks.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Away From Four Marks. Saturday, 1 February 2014. 1st February - Farlington Marshes. I met up with Ian at Farlington on a day when strong winds, heavy showers and a very high spring tide was due, it was also the morning after a night of heavy rain. We set off along the sea wall walking through puddles, while looking across the Hay Field you could see many flooded areas. We then experienced all forms of weather. First the sun, then a complete rainbow, then rain and finally horizontal hail. We tough...The t...
