Sunday, February 26, 2012. Decimals: Understanding that Little Dot. After teaching my unit on fractions, I move on into teaching decimals. It just makes sense because they are both used to represent parts of a whole. Plus 5/10 and 0.5 mean the same thing so it helps kids to start decimals while they are still in the fraction frame of mind. Check out my PowerPoint presentation at my TpT store. The next day we watch the following video:. One of the fundamental concepts that students in grades 2-4 must unde...

Tricks of the Teaching Trade: Wonderful Word Problems
http://tricksoftheteachingtrade.blogspot.com/2012/03/wonderful-word-problems.html
Friday, March 16, 2012. Did you know that the majority of math questions on standardized tests are word problems? Did you know that many kids who are low and reading score poorly on math portions of tests because they can not read the problems? Did you know that it doesn't have to be that way? My lower performing students always do so much better in math than they do in reading. Why? I teach to them as 3-2-1:. 3 M's, 2 L's, CDF. Uch er (shorter, longer, fatter, hotter, taller.). It is amazing how much ke...

Tricks of the Teaching Trade: The Properties of Multiplication
http://tricksoftheteachingtrade.blogspot.com/2012/03/properties-of-multiplication.html
Thursday, March 22, 2012. The Properties of Multiplication. One of the keys in problem solving is to understand the fundamental properties of operations. I swear, I would give anything for kids to understand that they already know that 9x3=27 because they know that 3x9=27. But,for some reason, it is a hard concept to grasp. It is full of concrete examples, activities with manipulatives, real life examples, and much more. At the end of the unit students create a book about the properties. To create th...

Monday, May 28, 2012. Rounding Numbers Round Up. I still remember my first couple of years teaching rounding numbers. It was so hard. I had the most difficult time getting through to children. They just could not understand when to round up and when to round down using the only tool I knew to use at the time: the text book. Finally, two fellow teachers and I created a song that 10 years later is still helping my students be successful with rounding. See a preview of it at my TpT store. Sunday, May 6, 2012.

Saturday, May 10, 2014. Best Mother's Day Gifts Ever! I have not always been on top of things when it comes to creating Mother's Day gifts. Many years kids just ended up creating cards. One year I took pictures of the kids and we made magnetic book marks. Last year, I had the kids paint a picture. This year.this year I have a group of great moms and I just wanted to do something amazing. But if you take it step by step, and. Cause for suicidal thought. 3 Then draw eyes using ovals. 5 Finally it is time f...

I turned down the music and asked her if she wanted to pray and even though i thought she would protest having her music turned off, she enthusiastically agreed. Perhaps this is one of the things He was showing me.that even though I. Am not always ready to pray, she. What an awesome (and scary) responsibility!

White Chick Crumbs: Accessories - for me or my home?
http://whitechickcrumbs.blogspot.com/2011/11/accessories-for-me-or-my-home.html
I do not have a chunk of knowledge regarding one sphere of interest, rather a vat of random crumbs spanning various topics that usually are quite pointless unless I am watching jeopardy (domination). In other words, choosing to keep up with this blog is as advisable as selecting the “More Ghetto” route on the Garmin. It just got real up in here. Tales of the Creep. Saturday, November 12, 2011.
