Telling the Story, Selling the Story. Oranges: The Writer’s Fruit. August 24, 2012. When I’m giving creative writing classes, I think it’s important to waken up the senses. It blows off the dust of everyday life and gets everyone in the mood for writing. And there’s no better way to set your senses on fire than eating an orange. I bring a punnet of small oranges into class and ask students to write about the experience of eating an orange. Oranges: a fruit that help writers to awaken their senses. First ...

The Person I Became (or what I’ve really learned since being published). If you attend enough events as an author, you will find you are asked the same questions many times over. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because with each response, you are able to fine tune your answers. Are you a goat, or a sheep? Yes, but where did Mrs Creasy. What have you learned since you’ve been published? What have I learned since I’ve been published? Because I did it. I became the person I didn’t think I could become.

The bit your brain can't itch, served in a packet of alternative pig shit. May 15, 2015. June 1, 2015. Fake reviews. Fake reviews everywhere. These ‘writers’ are the enemy of words. They are the plastic Phoenixes rising from the heat of their own moist flatulence. No, it later rains tiny incontinent spider clowns. And umbrellas are outlawed. That’s not a town I want to live in. We had a chance to create something better. Read books and say what you want about them. Support the people out there who ha...

Agent Q&A: Amanda Jain of Inklings Literary Agency. June 30, 2016. June 30, 2016. Everybody knows the most time consuming part of querying: stalking agents online to find out everything from their favourite movie to their mum’s shoe size and then realising you can’t put any of that in your query anyway because then they’ll know you’re a freaky Stalker McStalkerson. This process of stalking is so much easier when the agent obliges with a social media presence. Q: HOW CAN WE MAKE YOU LOVE US? Ah, the query...

Telling the Story, Selling the Story. Three Wrong Ways to Use the Apostrophe. August 17, 2015. The apostrophe is a difficult mark to pin down. Many people find it impossible to know where exactly to place it in a word. They simply wedge it in somewhere and hope for the best. Their text becomes festooned with apostrophes, particularly when words end in S. No wonder there are websites and Facebook groups. Devoted to gathering photographic evidence of apostrophic errors. Be careful how you use the apostrophe.
