The View from the Back Row: October 2009
http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Bill Watrous on Samantha. I know Jon usually posts the YouTube of the Week, but he's informed me that his posting might be sporadic for a while, so I've decided to step in where I can to keep things regular around here. I was inspired to look up Bill Watrous on YouTube by my friend Joe, who recently saw him play live in Houston. I came across this recording of Watrous playing "Samantha", a beautiful ballad, and the video (while grainy) gives some amazing shots of his use of slide vibrato. Enjoy! It's dif...

The View from the Back Row: on recordings
http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2010/05/on-recordings.html
Personally, I have been part of a number of scheduled recordings like this. The Symphonic Band at the RLMU was part of a number of recordings of new band music for sampler CDs for band directors. Most notably, however, I was in the band that recorded Jim Bonney's. Which appears on BCM's Men of Industry. CD It's a great piece of music, truly, and the recording experience was intense (and Jim Bonney is an amazingly inspirational person). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sounds like a bad shoujo-ai.".

The View from the Back Row: Glossary
http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2009/09/glossary.html
So because we don't always take time to explain ourselves, here's a little glossary of some terms used in this blog that might not be intuitive. We will be updating this as necessary. Japanese animated television shows or films, usually created for an adult audience rather than American-style "cartoons". The "Award-Winning Community Band" that Jon and Lauren share a stand in. This is a code name. The actual band is the East Winds Symphonic Band. Hamsters in the mugs. A concert or a performance of any type.

The View from the Back Row: March 2010
http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
I found this interesting video from composer Steven Bryant on YouTube. It's the first of a series about his compositional methods in creating his latest work, Concerto for Wind Ensemble. Do they have a melody in mind and try to build it in to these time signatures? It looks like Steven Bryant, at least, approaches it much differently. There's so much in this video - what did you find interesting? Links to this post. Allow me to rant for just a moment about clarity. A hyponym would be poodle. All Pepsis a...

So, the AWCB hasn't had rehearsal for the past two weeks, thanks to "SNOMAGGEDON", or the large snowstorm that blanketed our area with - gasp! Two feet of snow! Our city shut down - my university was closed for three days, and I don't think the area's elementary and high schools have been back to normal since. Lawn chairs have appeared all over. And vigilante parking authorities. I can hear you readers asking - what does this have to do with trombonery? So when we don't have rehearsal for weeks, I think ...

The View from the Back Row: Speaking of John Adams
http://viewfrombackrow.blogspot.com/2009/08/speaking-of-john-adams.html
Speaking of John Adams. I was in a very good mood yesterday. Along with the usual trappings of a good mood, like an inspired reading of the Wicked Witch of the West in the latest nightly bedtime chapter of the Wizard of Oz, I found an immediate karmic balance in an unaccountable compulsion to listen to Rutter's Gloria. To excise this piece of musical pablum from my mental ipod. I decided today to listen to a cd. I bought a little while ago: John Adams's Doctor Atomic Symphony,. With a number of expectati...
