Exchanging ideas through socially engaged art. Exchange Projects used a window and empty space in Hackney Wick as a starting point to develop a series of projects with the local community. These projects developed by 5 artists formed a conversation about the area through the mediums of drawing, photography, video and performance. Exchange projects explore the roles of participation and collaboration, which governs social practice. Exchange Project artists are Jack Brown. Louise Sayarer and Eva Vikstrom.

Exchange Projects was born out of 5 artists looking to create and promote socially engaged artwork, collaborating with local communities and artists. Since forming, we have worked with Hackney WickED. And a range of primary schools in the East London area including; St Dominic’s, Rushmore, Seabright and Gainsborough, along with a number of other artists and collectives. Exchange projects are consulting with schools about the future of Hackney. So far we have made ‘Hackneyspex’, built sculptural head pieces that hold our thoughts, designed a booklet for other pupils and parents to use, made massive floor drawings and investigated and regurgitated the sights and sounds of Hackney. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund through the Wick Award.

Exchange project space was the education programme for The Hackney Wicked Art Festival 2011. Founded by Jack Brown ( Hackney Wicked Festival Director - Learning ) the space was open for four months in Queens Yard, Hackney Wick. Five artists were invited to use the space as their studio, work collaboratively and program events in the space. Exchange Project Space became 'Exchange projects' when we left the space.
