TRAINING - Antarctica Ice Maiden

Exercise Ice Maiden will take place in November 2017, following an extensive 2-year training programme involving up to 50 women from the Regular Army and Reserve. The expedition received 250 applications more than any British Army adventurous training exped to date. 50 women were invited to attend a selection weekend in Capel Curig. A group of 22 were then selected to attend Exercise Ice Bambi in Norway in February 2016, gaining their Winter Survival Skills qualification.

This 14 day expedition will be in a remote location, simulating that of Antarctica, requiring all the skills learnt to be put into practice. At the end of this expedition, four women will be again selected to make up the final team, with two as reserves. Together we will train throughout the summer on a number of different weekends before deploying out to Chile in October 2017. The aims of EX ICE DIAMOND. Build on skills learnt on EX ICE READY. Practise and refine skills of crevasse rescue.

The squad, who will have been training throughout the summer with tyre pulling exercises and monthly trips, will travel again to Hardingaveda, Norway for the second installation of Norwegian guided expedition training. The aims for EX ICE READY. Build on the foundations learnt on EX ICE BAMBI. Develop nordic ski touring skills with pulks. Introduction and practise of polar navigation. After over 250 initial applications, 50 women were invited to the selection weekend in Capel Curig, North Wales. The aim of the weekend was to identify those with. And to allow women from different corners of the army to meet and develop their own adventures together. The women were put through a number of team building and physically challenging tasks. 20 of the women will advance to the next stage Ex ICE BAMBI, a foundation training exercise in Norway, March 2016.
