The InterAct consortium has constructed a case-cohort study nested within the existing large cohort EPIC study. The EPIC study includes 350,000 participants across 10 European countries. The 46th Annual meeting of the European Diabetes Epidemiology Group on 15 18th May 2011 in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. RL1 Analysis of gene-lifestyle interaction in observational studies of diabetes incidence. The overall goal of this Research Line was to construct a nested case-cohort study for T2D within the EPIC observational cohort and to use this study as the basis for studying gene-lifestyle interaction. Follow up has been completed for an average of 8 years, which provided 4 million person years . During this time 12,403 verified incident cases of type 2 diabetes were identified.

During the last four years a wide range of dissemination activities have been carried by InterAct partners across the different countries. These have included targeted activities for specialist audiences, such as researchers, clinicians and media, as well as for the general public. In 2007 press release was sent to national media in the UK. The coordinator, Nick Wareham, gave an interview on the radio (BBC Cambridgeshire) about the InterAct project and diabetes as a public health problem in general.

Why is diabetes important? Diabetes is a chronic disorder of glucose metabolism and is a major cause of heart disease and end-stage renal disease in European populations, the single biggest cause of preventable blindness, the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation and major cause of premature mortality. The secular trend and geographical variation of type 2 diabetes suggest that genes and lifestyles interact in their influence on glucose metabolism and the development of diabetes.
