Filming Foxes : February 2014

http://filmingfoxes.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

And other local wildlife). Monday, 24 February 2014. The Mystery Of The Missing Badgers. On the outskirts of the village there is a large mound of earth. It is not much to look at, and in the summer an eruption of nettles protects it from human intruders, but for at least the last three years now it has been shared by both a family of Foxes and a family of Badgers. The entrances into the Badger sett were completely flooded! So what had become of the Badgers? In some better equipment! Last week I went out...

Filming Foxes : The Man of the Forest

http://filmingfoxes.blogspot.com/2014/08/the-man-of-forest.html

And other local wildlife). Sunday, 3 August 2014. The Man of the Forest. Last week I arrived in the Indonesian village of Bukit Lawang, located on the outskirts of the famous Gunung Leuser National Park, to go in search of. The Sumatran Orangutan. The experience was one that I shall never forget, but also one that I didn't expect. There it was above us. A solitary, ginger haze sitting high up in the canopy, obscured by leaves. Luckily my camera had a good zoom. This was a female, and she sat ...Yet this ...

Filming Foxes : Oxfordshire Goes Wild!

http://filmingfoxes.blogspot.com/2014/10/oxfordshire-goes-wild.html

And other local wildlife). Wednesday, 8 October 2014. Recently I visited Oxfordshire Goes Wild,. An event aimed at getting kids into nature which is now making its rounds in local communities, this year in Bicester. Run by Wild Oxfordshire- which coordinates a partnership of many organisations from across the county- the event saw 22 contributors come together at a local primary school to show children how amazing the wildlife around them really is. For sightings through their website. I'm an aspiring yo...

Filming Foxes : June 2014

http://filmingfoxes.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

And other local wildlife). Wednesday, 25 June 2014. An outbreak of Myxomatosis in the Village has been keeping me busy recently. After being introduced to the UK in the early 1950s to control the Rabbit population, Myxomatosis rapidly decimated Rabbit numbers by 99% in its first two years here. Nfortunately (despite increased genetic resistance among Rabbit populations) the disease still remains present across much of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Sure enough we eventually found a poorly Rabbit, which...

Filming Foxes : Happy New Year!

http://filmingfoxes.blogspot.com/2014/12/happy-new-year.html

And other local wildlife). Wednesday, 31 December 2014. It's been a busy but exciting last two months for me. In November, I moved to Bristol to start my career in wildlife film-making as an apprentice at the BBC Natural History Unit. As such I haven't had as much time to get out in the wild recently, but to finish the year I thought I'd take a look back at my top 5 wildlife highlights of 2014:. 4 Exploring My Local Patch. 3 Going Cuckoo for Cuckoos. In July my friends and I went travelling for a month i...

A Wild Life in Norfolk: February 2014

http://wildlifelocalpatch.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Monday, 24 February 2014. The Return of the Mouse, the Blue Tits and Strumpshaw Fen. Nature Diary Pages for Strumpshaw. Gadwall (the one with its head up! We took a walk along the 'woodland path', a route I haven't taken since I was an undergraduate ecologist, and found some interesting organisms, including a Scarlet Elf Cup fungus, plenty of snow drops, and some flowering cherry plum blossom. Huge flock of geese. To be honest, it's been a very exciting few days all around! On goi...

A Wild Life in Norfolk: April 2014

http://wildlifelocalpatch.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Saturday, 26 April 2014. Well, I had to get an Easter pun in somewhere. I realised that this little blog has been a bit neglected for the last couple of weeks as the Easter holiday came to a close and the summer term started. Here is what I have been up to, with some exciting updates about our blue tits! We don't see sparrows hardly ever where we live in Norfolk, so it's always a treat to watch them and listen to them chattering away to each other when we head back to Cambridge.

http://wildlifelocalpatch.blogspot.com/2016/06/30dayswild-days-8-9-honey-bees-and.html

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Thursday, 9 June 2016. 30DaysWild - Days 8 and 9 - Honey, bees and the wildflower meadow. Club outside to sow the bare patches. They seemed to have a lovely time (apart from the hay-fever sufferers) and are excited about the idea of making the insect hotels next week. I took a few photos of the wildflowers that are in full bloom already, parts of it are looking quite stunning now. Location: Reepham, Norwich, Norfolk, UK. 12 June 2016 at 11:54. Sounds like a lovely couple of days!

A Wild Life in Norfolk: #30DaysWild - Day 7 - Bee spotting

http://wildlifelocalpatch.blogspot.com/2016/06/30dayswild-day-7-bee-spotting.html

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Tuesday, 7 June 2016. 30DaysWild - Day 7 - Bee spotting. The first, I already knew as I help to keep honeybees at work, the dainty Apis mellifera. Sampled all of my newly added bee friendly plants. The second I knew was a bumblebee, but had no idea on the species, it was so small and incredibly furry. Using my guide, I think I have now identified it as an early bumblebee, Bombus pratorum. The final bee was a buff-tailed bumblee, Bombus terrestris audax. BBC Wildlife Blogger Awards.

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Tuesday, 16 August 2016. 17 August 2016 at 20:47. 18 August 2016 at 13:41. Thank you for your comment, ever since I read Richard Louvs book Last Child in the Woods before I became a teacher, I decided to make it a mission. A Wild Life in Norfolk: August 2014

http://wildlifelocalpatch.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Thursday, 28 August 2014. The Galapagos - Floreana Island. Travelling in style on Floreana. Yellow warbler, mid snack. Brown pelican against the dusky beech. Having the full attention of a striated heron can be a little disconcerting. Straight afterwards, we had to prepare for our speed boat ride to our next island; Isabela. But more on that in my next post! Only after we had been seen off by the marine iguanas though.). Sunday, 24 August 2014. The Galapagos - San Cristobal Island.

A Wild Life in Norfolk: January 2015

http://wildlifelocalpatch.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Sunday, 25 January 2015. RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch 2015. I was very sure. It seems we have cultivated our own miniature murmuration. Our other records this year were:. Collared dove - 2. Wood pigeon - 2. Blue tit - 2. Great tit - 2. One of our robins is very territorial; not only did it chase off the other robin, it dive bombed the poor dunnock unawares, and they ended up rolling on the ground before the dunnock flew away. Location: Norwich, Norwich, Norfolk, UK. Location: Pensth...

A Wild Life in Norfolk: #30DaysWild - Days 5 & 6 - Strumpshaw Swallowtail

http://wildlifelocalpatch.blogspot.com/2016/06/30dayswild-days-5-6-strumpshaw.html

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Monday, 6 June 2016. 30DaysWild - Days 5 and 6 - Strumpshaw Swallowtail. RSPB Strumpshaw Fen was fabulous today. Last year, we spent a long time hunting for swallowtails and saw one from quite a distance. Today, there was one large, beautiful individual a stone's throw from the carpark and reception hide. Whilst we were watching the elegant swallowtail, a shout of "otter! After seeing two dragonflies which I can now 'tick' (if I had a list), we then spotted their arch nemesis, the...

http://wildlifelocalpatch.blogspot.com/2016/06/30dayswild-days-11-rspb-minsmere-and.html

A Wild Life in Norfolk. Sunday, 12 June 2016. 30DaysWild - Days 11&12 - RSPB Minsmere and allotmenting. Well, it's certainly been a wild weekend. The photos I managed to take at Minsmere don't do justice to the phenomenal amount of wildlife we actually saw. On our way to the next hide, we noticed cameras set up on a number of stickleback nests. Maybe this will be another 'Spineless Si' on Springwatch? Walking back, we tried the adder trail, but rather than adders, it was full of rabbits and dragonflies (...
