Fav -Class Start | Finding the Process

https://findingtheprocess.wordpress.com/2016/01/20/fav-class-start

Reflections on my teaching. Skip to primary content. January 20, 2016. A favorite is when students walked into class and immediately began thinking and talking about mathematics. This year, I decided to kick-off the start of each class with a rotation touching on the mathematical practices. Tied to the current unit? Maybe, but not necessarily. Nope, some days are magical and others not so much. Monday – Graphing Stories. Tuesday – Visual Patterns. Wednesday – Estimation 180. Thursday – Math Talks. This a...

Reflections on my teaching. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Newer posts →. MSIS Session 2, Day 2. February 1, 2016. More disconnected thoughts from the MSIS at the Shanghai American School. Opening: Formative Assessment is challenging to implement because it necessitates us to adjust our teaching. It’s so much easier to believe that students walked out of the door understanding what happened than to find out that they didn’t and need to adjust. Start with the Problem! 3a – Ident...

Reworking Sugar Packets | Finding the Process

https://findingtheprocess.wordpress.com/2016/08/30/reworking-sugar-packets

Reflections on my teaching. Skip to primary content. August 30, 2016. Seeing the look on student faces as the video plays makes the problem. Seriously! What is that guy doing? This is a Dan Meyer 3Act Problem – please see link for original problem and video. However my next math class of the day was a full length class (80 minutes) so reworking was needed. Here is the new flow and it provided for a better lesson where students were more engaged and actively discussing mathematics for an extended time.

https://andrewsmathspace.wordpress.com/2016/03/07/comment-codes

March 7, 2016. Recently on Twitter, in the Principles to Actions (#NCTMp2a) slow math chat, the topic of Comment Codes came up. The first week of March, Question #3 was, “What are some ways to response to student thinking in your classes? A3: instead of writing a grade on assignments, ask questions. Musings about teaching middle school math. Those pesky meter sticks. Organizing Lessons →. On posting learning objectives. August 28, 2012. I haven’t actually read any of the research that no doubt exists to support this practice, but I have my doubts. How exactly does writing Students will be able to prepare okra on the board actually motivate students to cook okra, or promote okra achievement? Simply writing the objective doesn’t change the actual lesson, right? Be the ones to tell. On posting learning...

Frank, Krista, Sage and Xian in Taiwan: May 2013

http://taichungteachers.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Frank, Krista, Sage and Xian in Taiwan. Exploring and enjoying life as we see the world and watch our girls grow. Sunday, May 26, 2013. Xian and I seized the opportunity to take a morning walk over the weekend. Temporarily, the rains cleared and the sun had not yet turned the outside into a sticky oven. A few dogs took passing interest in Audrey and threatened from a distance yet gave us plenty of room. The pink spot is XO's awesome hat. Closed flower on the vine. Opened up - what are the red seeds?

Finding The Plot | Adventures of an allotment virgin

Adventures of an allotment virgin. Asymp; Leave a comment. Driving home from the tip last week (having just dropped off a load of smashed glass and broken cold frames) a song drifted into my head. It was Massive Attack’s version of the soul classic,. Be thankful for what you’ve got. The next day, as I spent a few hours up at the plot preparing the soil, the words seemed especially appropriate. In the meantime, one verse from the song keeps rolling around my head …. A bath full of carrots. February 8, 2014.

Finding the point

July 27, 2015. Sometimes I wonder if our ancestors had fewer theological questions because they were so much more connected to nature. My life is the same, whether it’s snowing, raining, sunny, hot or cold. I stay up well after dark and sometimes wake up before it gets light — or, my preference, well after the sun is high in the sky. As I’ve gotten more and more into gardening, I’ve been amazed at the parallels between nature and real life. Not too much, of course. I just dug up half-dead shamrocks b...

The Gratitude Project

Wednesday, March 21, 2012. I am grateful for the comfortable bed I slept in; for my phone waking me up when I needed to; for my poochie who likes to pounce on me when I wake up; for the soap, the shampoo, the conditioner; for the refrigerator, the stove and toilet; for bidets which make me smile! For oatmeal breakfasts; for carpet/rugs to warm the floor; for blenders; for washing machines; for dryers; especially for clotheslines; for tea kettles; for flip-flops! Friday, March 16, 2012. What a great day!

finding the purpose | one day at a time

One day at a time. Winging it: a how-to (not) story. I take full responsibility for my lack of preparedness for the Louisiana Half Marathon. This story is not cringe-worthy or hard to read, though. It is better described as miraculous, considering that I didn’t give-up or pass out. Warning: I do not condone or recommend this as a method of half-marathon preparation. I want to tell my story in hopes that it will motivate you to train your butt off. Maybe I’ll even sign up for the marathon! Around November...

Wandering through life with a curious mind. What Am I Pondering Today? The bowl breaks. Everywhere is falling everywhere. Nothing else to do. Here's the new rule: break the wineglass. Earlier this week I dusted off my sewing machine and hauled out that relic of an ironing board – don’t you love fabrics these days? For What Binds Us. Wherever they've b...
