Florula Urbana: May 2009

http://www.florulaurbana.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 30 May 2009. I had a look round an area of remnant woodland which has survived urbanisation because it is on land to steep to be built on. A large number of tree species are regenerating here - the following were observed. Field maple ( Acer campestre. Sycamore ( Acer pseudoplatanus. Horse chestnut ( Aesculus hippocastaneum. Sp), hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna. Beech ( Fagus sylvatica. Ash ( Fraxinus excelsion. Holly ( Ilex aquifolium. Oak ( Quercus robur. Elder ( Sambucus nigra. And elm ( Ulmus.

Florula Urbana: town centre

http://www.florulaurbana.blogspot.com/2009/06/town-centre.html

Friday, 5 June 2009. While visiting the library and supermarket today I took the opportunity to record plants present in the town centre. Just two days after first observing small nettle ( Urtica urens. In the Florula Prima. Area, I found another one here. Another new plant is lady's mantle ( Alchemilla mollis. Having made a start on identifying willows I note that sallow ( Salix caprea. Sp) is also growing here. I came back along the canal, where I passed a meadow cranesbill ( Geranium pratense.

Florula Urbana: June 2008

http://www.florulaurbana.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, 26 June 2008. Some plants that I've seen, but neglected to record. Shining cranesbill ( Geranium lucidum. Large bitter cress ( Cardamine amara. Occurs along a section of canal bank. Bitter cress ( Cardamine. Sp): probably both hairy ( Cardamine hirusta. And wavy ( Cardamine flexuosa. Occur, but I seem to not have identified any plant to species, and they're not flowering any more, so I can't count stamens, which is the easiest way of distinguishing them. Oxford ragwort ( Senecio squalidus.

Monday, 8 June 2009. I've confirmed a previously suspected occurrence of yellow rattle ( Rhinanthus minor. In the park to the east of the town. One instance of winter cress has been identified as Barbarea vulgaris. Crack willow ( Salix fragilis. Is among the willow species present in the area. There are also sallows ( Salix caprea. Agg), and several other types. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Florula Prima: More plants

http://florulaprima.blogspot.com/2009/06/more-plants.html

Thursday, 11 June 2009. This afternoon I had a look at the low hill that occupies the south west extremity of parish A. On the way there, in a corner of a field in the meadows I noticed a small colony of narrow-leaved bitter cress ( Cardamine impatiens. Within the target site I noted over 50 species, including smooth tare ( Vicia tetrasperma. And woodrush ( Luzula. Sp) (not Luzula sylvatica. But perhaps Luzula pilosa. And also the first record of wood anemone ( Anemone nemorosa. For the running list.

Wednesday, 17 June 2009. I has a quick look at the west end of the parish. Here the meadows which lie to the south of the town run into an area of mixed meadow, scrub and woodland. Among the 21 species recorded are two new to the area - there is a small area of regenerating silver birch ( Betula pendula. And a single plant of pheasantberry ( Leycesteria formosa. There is also a cherry laurel ( Prunus laurocerasus. With no nearby plantings, and the first record of mouseear hawkweed ( Pilosella officinarum.

Wednesday, 3 June 2009. The wild growing dogwood I observed down the road last year is now flowering, so I may be able to use the fruit to identify the species later this year. I also encountered this evening another wild growing dogwood (this time in parish O). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Friday, 12 June 2009. Today I came across a couple of cranesbill which are not among the use suspects ( pyrenaicum. Florula Prima: willows

http://florulaprima.blogspot.com/2009/06/willows.html

Monday, 1 June 2009. On Saturday evening I took the field edition of Clapham, Tutin and Warburg with me, and went to look at the willows on a couple of nearby sites - the old railway line running behind my house, and the meadows on the south side of town. There appear to be five types of willow growing along the old railway line. There is sufficient variation among the leaves of sallows that I suspect that there are two species present, probably Salix caprea. Osier ( Salix viminalis. Subscribe to: Post C...
