I was in the throes of writing a paper on Sophocles' magnificent tragedy Ajax. When I stumbled on this comment from one of my sources:. Menis, famous as the first word of the Iliad- indeed one can say it is the first word in European literature- generally implies sustained, enduring wrath with a desire for revenge. Aristotle was more sympathetic to overwhelming anger than to other, baser desires: in the Ethics. He stated that those who are swept away by anger still somehow have control over their reason.
