As a direct result of a successful partnership between Newport City Council and The Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust over a million pounds of funding has been secured from The Heritage Lottery Fund and other funding bodies for the restoration of two pairs of locks on the Cefn Flight of Fourteen Locks. Could you be a Volunteer Canal Boatman in South Wales? The Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust and The Islwyn Canal Association. Both ply a trip boat on the Monmouth and Brecon Canal. Also in Neath, volunteers will be trained to operate the Thomas Dadford on the Neath Canal in Neath and Port Talbot. Canal Trusts are looking for volunteers to train to be helmsmen and women. The Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is a twentieth-century name for two eighteenth century Canals. The Monmouthshire Canal was granted its Act in 1792 and by 1796 eleven miles from Pontnewynydd to Newport were complete. The eleven mile Crumlin Arm from Crindau Junction to Crumlin was fully open by 1799.
