Its worth looking at Sir ACDs list of cheats which he considered that fair-minded mystery writers should not use (like identical twins, for instance). Its also amusing how rarely he uses murder as the crime, and indeed how in over 50% of his Holmes stories no actual crime is committed at all - he took pride in having achieved that whilst giving the impression that they were crime stories.
