Things to do in Appleby
http://theholliesappleby.co.uk/things-to-do.html
The historic market town of Appleby is just on your doorstep with its castle, now open again. It was the former county town of Westmorland, with a court that had the same status as the high court in London, it is still used as the council local chamber. If you are here on a Tuesday morning our local Blue Badge Giude leads an excellent tour round the town. Is privately owned and now open again to the public. Tours can be booked online or at the Tourist Information office. Long distance walk from Saltaire ...

The Hollies - About us
http://theholliesappleby.co.uk/about-us.html
It has taken us some time to escape back to the hills and a sane pace of life but that is what we have found in the Eden Valley. Appleby is a wonderful place, big enough to have most things we need and small enough to be friendly. It's a world away from the 'rat race' and we would love to share it with you. Renovation of the Hollies. There is a distinct charm about the old building and its grounds which we have retained by creating a distinctly homely atmosphere in which to welcome you. Renovation in...

Julie Made This: November 2014
http://juliemadethis.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
My random ramblings and some things that I have made. Saturday, 22 November 2014. A knit for my baby. Of course, as is the case with most new mothers, reality turned out to be a little different to my imaginings. I ended up with a baby who was happiest in my arms and I was happy to oblige, which meant my ability to knit or crochet was severely curtailed. In fact, while I have crocheted intermittently since M’s arrival I had not picked up knitting needles since her birth until earlier this year! The yarn ...

Julie Made This: Richard's hat
http://juliemadethis.blogspot.com/2014/12/richards-hat.html
My random ramblings and some things that I have made. Tuesday, 30 December 2014. This was a Christmas present for our friend Richard. Richard likes hats. Indeed I read Hamilton's Hats. I have made hats for Richard in the past, including a Victorian gentleman's sleeping cap. With time being short, I decided I had to work from my stash with hook or needles I already owned. I didn't have time to trawl through my many pattern books or Ravelry. Trying to match up my available yarns with potential hats, so I d...

Julie Made This: Of carols and alpacas
http://juliemadethis.blogspot.com/2014/12/of-carols-and-alpacas.html
My random ramblings and some things that I have made. Saturday, 20 December 2014. Of carols and alpacas. This is the weekend before Christmas and this month seems to have flown by. We've done most of our gift shopping online this year and are still waiting for a few of them to arrive, but this is in the hands of couriers or the postal service so there isn't much we can do about it. Instead, we're settling in to enjoying the festive season proper and that means lots of family time. Which went well too.

Julie Made This: Going on an ice hunt
http://juliemadethis.blogspot.com/2015/01/going-on-ice-hunt_4.html
My random ramblings and some things that I have made. Sunday, 4 January 2015. Going on an ice hunt. Today we awoke to a cold, cold morning and the street cloaked in a thick blanket of freezing fog. It seemed like an ideal day to have a brisk walk around the local nature reserve at Brandon Marsh. M was a little reluctant, preferring the idea of staying indoors but I tempted her with the idea that she could wear her pyjamas under her clothes and how fun that would be! Frozen spider's web in the courtyard o...

Julie Made This: A Chinese sheep
http://juliemadethis.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-chinese-sheep.html
My random ramblings and some things that I have made. Saturday, 28 February 2015. February is full of holidays with so many crafting opportunities for myself and M, which has led to a busy few weeks. I've signed up for a MOOC. Which is taking up what little free time I have in the evenings, plus I have a BSL course to make progress on, meaning I'm feeling a bit over commited at the moment. It is all good though, I just need more hours in the day! Work in progress cardigan. Our Chinese NY sheep. We were b...

Julie Made This: Felt planetary bodies
http://juliemadethis.blogspot.com/2015/04/felt-planetary-bodies.html
My random ramblings and some things that I have made. Wednesday, 1 April 2015. Looking back over the past few weeks, we enjoyed a partial eclipse in the UK on the 20th March. Predictably that morning was cloudy, so while it went semi dark, the birds stopped tweeting and the light levels were odd, that was as good as it got. An eclipse viewed through cloud. The cloud parted and we saw this in our pinhole projectors. The Sun, Earth and Moon - in felt. A lesson learned there. The Earth in two halves. Awesom...
