Trunk fusions are a grafting technique that use multiple approach grafts on seedlings or rooted cuttings to create a large base trunk with a dramatic even taper in a relatively short time frame. The traditional way to grow a trunk quickly is to plant a tree in the ground to grow and then chop the trunk repeatedly for several years. This method, while quick, leaves massive scars and a disfigured trunk. 1) Control of the tree design.

Several months back a Canadian Documentary company contacted me and asked to use one of my photos in an upcoming documentary tentatively titled 10 Trees That Can Save The World. I agreed to let them use a photo of an Albino Coastal Redwood. Not my best photograph but one the producers liked. On the underside I had to enlarge the exit hole because the trunk had thickened so much that the plastic was digging into it. From the other side you can see a lower branch that will become the future apex. The current plan is to grow the tree aggressively for another 2 or3 years before repotting. Greg Wentzel's trunk fusion projects and more. When I see a fertilizer that is labeled Bonsai fertilizer I have to chuckle. This is just a marketing gimmick. There is no one perfect fertilizer. Each tree has it’s own specific nutritional needs. Even trees of the same species have different needs based on age, size, potting mix etc. Because bonsai soils are generally porous, nutrients can quickly flush away. So when I moved to Virginia after college I thought I was in tree heaven. It had a canopy about 3ft across, and these 2 slender trunks holding the whole mass up. No idea how old it is but it must have been growing in the crack in the wall for at least 10 yrs or so to get to the size it was? First pic was November 2011.
