I call the concurrency pattern used within Gaffer the APE Pattern. APE is short for Actors, Processes, and Events. These three fundamental constructs must be understood by clients of the library to use it effectively. Actors encapsulate game state data. They can be complex, with geometries, textures, and so on, or they can be simpler forms of data. The key is that Actors never manipulate their own data. They are essentially "dumb" actors.

Several components are functional, but all are still a bit in flux as the design matures. Working well on one core. Designed to run one of these on each core. There's still some testing for the multi-core scenarios, but the GUI subsystem will be useful in creating test tools so priorities have switched there. Gaffer and clients can create various event types and they are handled appropriately. Events moving from one process manager to another is implemented but not fully tested.

Each game loop has its own list of Processes that it updates on each iteration. Gaffer automatically load balances processes within these loops by keeping track of which Actors each Process has ownership over. Gaffer ensures that for any given Actor, all Processes that own this Actor run within the same game loop, and thus within the same thread. Since processes within one game loop never update concurrently, there is no need for locking or synchronization between them.
