The Almost-Green Thumb

Thursday, February 20, 2014. 2013 reflection 2014 goals. It has been a couple of years since I last made a gardening post. But despite my online absence, I have been gardening and learning A LOT! I think I got a bad pack of bean seeds because not one germinated either by direct sow or indoor planting). As far as starter plants, I purchased tomatoes, brussels sprouts, sweet red peppers, basil, and red cabbage. With these I had mixed results, which I will explain shortly. Long shot of veggie garden. I had ...

The Almost-Green Thumb: June 2011

http://www.gardenexperiment2010.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 21, 2011. So, here is an overview of what I ordered and what I did not receive. Thirty hardy geraniums, ten day lilies, and five cone flowers. In addition, I was told the six rose bushes I ordered were out of stock as well. Same with the two garden grab bags ($200 worth of plants for $20). I don't want my house to look like the jungle! I guess I will pot them up and try to give them away as gifts. Oh well. One can't expect to like everything in a grab bag. Friday, June 17, 2011. Peas—...

The Almost-Green Thumb: July garden pictures

http://www.gardenexperiment2010.blogspot.com/2011/07/july-garden-pictures.html

Monday, July 18, 2011. Miniature hollyhock in front of daisies. But what more can I do—I can hardly bend over! Brief update on veggies:. Harvested my beets yesterday and roasted them for a beet, goat cheese, and arugula salad today for lunch. Yummy! The carrots are ready to go, but they are stuck hard in the ground. I can't pull them out without a shovel. Cavan loves eating them right out of the ground, washed by the hose, of course. Our broccoli plants each have excellent heads growing. The peas are sti...

The Almost-Green Thumb: Long overdue update: Part 1—Veggie Garden

http://www.gardenexperiment2010.blogspot.com/2011/06/long-overdue-update-part-1veggie-garden.html

Friday, June 17, 2011. Long overdue update: Part 1—Veggie Garden. Cavan admiring the biggest radish. Plucked from the garden. Peas—I didn't stake them this year and most of them. Have flopped over. Now I know for next time. Here's what's up in the veggie garden. Brussell sprouts—Notice all the holes from the cabbage worms. Radishes—All have been harvested. We had some giant cherry bombs and some the size of blueberries. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason for the size difference, but sinc...Eggplants a...

The almost stay-at-home mom. From teacher to stay-at-home mom. Baby is born, so let the adventure begin! Saturday, April 30, 2011. The no-shower, Saturday morning routine. Vacuuming is so satisfying for so many reasons. A good vacuuming (along with the preliminary de-cluttering) makes such a dramatic visual improvement that it makes Mommy feel like a good housekeeper (at least once or twice a week! The almost stay-at-home mom. From teacher to stay-at-home mom. Baby is born, so let the adventure begin! Friday, January 20, 2012. New Year's resolutions: almost one month strong. I am generally not the type to make New Year's resolutions, but this year, major changes were implemented by Hubby and I right around January 1. And three weeks later, they are all still going strong. Which brings me to my next point. This is not really a routine to track, but I'm on a mission to get rid of all the crap in the ...

The almost stay-at-home mom. From teacher to stay-at-home mom. Baby is born, so let the adventure begin! Friday, September 23, 2011. The Green Smoothie Diet. I'm starting the first diet I've ever been on in my life. Yes, I gave birth only two months ago, but I am beyond ready to get my pre-baby body back. Step Two—new diet: Integrate one quart of green smoothies into my day. Green smoothie, you say? Another twist to the diet—it was Hubby's idea. Not for me to lose weight, but he was the one tha...One of ...

The almost stay-at-home mom. From teacher to stay-at-home mom. Baby is born, so let the adventure begin! Tuesday, September 27, 2011. I will teach her. Cavan and I are sitting at the dining table this morning eating scrambled eggs and I ask Cavan if she is going to teach Emma everything she knows. Cavan says "Yes! And proceeds to tell me everything that she will teach her little sister. I will teach her how to walk outside. I will teach her how to drink a sippy. I will teach her how to eat with a fork.

The almost stay-at-home mom. From teacher to stay-at-home mom. Baby is born, so let the adventure begin! Tuesday, June 28, 2011. After she stopped crying, I assessed the situation. Four stings—one between her eyebrows, one on her right eyelid, one by her right tear duct, and one directly under her right eye. Bastard wasp. Hubby took immediate action and found a small nest under the rock Cavan was sitting on. He not only sprayed it and the flying wasps with insecticide but also stomped the nest to dust.

The almost stay-at-home mom. From teacher to stay-at-home mom. Baby is born, so let the adventure begin! Thursday, May 26, 2011. Spoiled rotten. And I'm actually not referring to Cavan, but rather myself. This morning brought me back to the reality of how parenthood is for most people- Cavan woke up at 6:45 am. Many parents I know are up between 5:00-6:00 am with their kids- not just lounging around and nursing a baby, but full-fledged, we're-up-to-start-our-day routines. EEK! However, Cavan consistently...

The almost stay-at-home mom. From teacher to stay-at-home mom. Baby is born, so let the adventure begin! Wednesday, August 31, 2011. Emma—One month update pictures. Well, without our power being out for four days, I was unable to post in a timely manner. So without further delay, here is Emma's one-month update. How did my baby get to be one month old so quickly? But the craziness eventually ended and my newborn started sleeping, and after about a six weeks, I finally started to enjoy life again. Her new...

The almost stay-at-home mom. From teacher to stay-at-home mom. Baby is born, so let the adventure begin! Thursday, March 31, 2011. Usually the second kid gets the shaft. Actually, we were busy as hell when Cavan was born: I was working full time, Hubby was finishing graduate school, and we just renovated and moved into our new house. Cavan was lucky I was able to rearrange our schedules to accomodate her delivery! So, what do I have planned for baby number two? Wednesday, March 30, 2011. I guess I just t...
