Thoughts on life, theology, leadership and other stuff. I Quit Church Pastoring Today. March 27, 2016. March 28, 2016. After twenty-seven years on the staffs of three churches, one medium, one big and one small, I quit today. No, not out of frustration though there were those difficult moments over the years. No, not because I was fired, though there were times some hoped that would happen. And no, not because I don’t believe in the church and its importance in making disciples. Couples, parents and fami...

Thoughts on life, theology, leadership and other stuff. Christmas: Merry, Messy or Both? December 13, 2016. A good friend lost his dad today. Another relative is still missing her husband who died far too soon. I had a call this afternoon from a company leader who watched the rescue squad carry a worker away who had been killed on the job in a tragic accident. You see, Christmas doesn’t have to be a totally happy, merry time. It only takes on its complete significance in the context of messy...DonR...

Thoughts on life, theology, leadership and other stuff. When Christians Gloat Over Answers to Prayer. March 18, 2016. March 18, 2016. My wife and I lived in Austin, Texas for eight years and loved it. We enjoyed the wonderful weather (well except for June – August), great food, phenomenal music, friendly people, wild flowers and lots of other amenities. Some suggested it might be decades before. Was attained again, if ever. And while I’m happy that one of my favorite parts of the country is enjoyin...

Thoughts on life, theology, leadership and other stuff. What I’d Rather Be Way More Than Famous. December 30, 2016. There are lots of well-known Christians in today’s media, internet and popularity – driven culture who are now household names. I’m not one of them and quite thankful about that. Now to be fair, many of them didn’t ask for their fame, status or iconic status and like me, might prefer they didn’t have it. Some of it came with the. Or perhaps after reading. The Prayer of Jabez.). You know wha...

Thoughts on life, theology, leadership and other stuff. Some Wisdom For Every Pastor Who Wants To Finish Well – Part 1. September 16, 2016. September 16, 2016. Another well known pastor just quit the ministry. He left a large, thriving, growing church because he was burnt out. Apparently pastors of all sizes, traditions, styles and locations of congregations continue to pack it in and call it quits. Why the continued mass exodus from ministry? It would be easy to focus on one reason as the culprit:.

Thoughts on life, theology, leadership and other stuff. If Your Heart Is Hurting This Christmas. December 16, 2016. Janice sat by herself in the mall waiting for Carol to buy another present at a nearby store. Janice had agreed to accompany her friend to the mall for some Christmas shopping but was now regretting that she had come. Janice hadn’t bought one gift and probably would not today or the next day. It was always Mom and me who went shopping together. But not this year or ever again. First of all,.
