Each month from July 28th, 2014 until February 28th, 2018 - the centennial of the outbreak of World War I until the approximate centennial of Haden Laas' deployment to France - one hymn will be uploaded. Laas seemed to struggle with the writing of this. (Perhaps he struggled with all of it and we happen to have received his polished, last versions.) Messy manuscript, with wordless, abandoned ideas around a B minor chord written separately from the main body. I have assumed those ideas were meant for the same piece and have worked them in. The original had a blasé, excessively Catholic tone that I had to somehow undercut. No lyrics provided by Laas - it was remarkable to discover how well his phrasing matches Christ's sermon on the mount. I feel confident those were the words intended for this setting, albeit without my doubting Thomas lines. Shall not by bread alone. But by the word of God. Live true and righteously.
