More Procrastination: Arrow's Theorem and Indecision
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2014/06/arrows-theorem-and-indecision.html
Should I be doing something else? Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Arrow's Theorem and Indecision. Also known as "Arrow's paradox," the theorem can be expressed in several ways; the Wikipedia article " Arrow's Impossibility Theorem. Unanimity prevails: if an option is ranked top in all rankings, it will be ranked top in the consensus. Insensitivity to irrelevant alternatives: removing an option other than the winner should not change the consensus result. A Sort of "Perfection Paralysis". It has an influence on o...

More Procrastination: August 2006
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html
Should I be doing something else? Friday, August 25, 2006. Jeanne Calment died at age 122 in 1997; she was the French woman who lived the longest to date, as far as we know. On August 12, 2006, Camille Loiseau, "oldest living French person since March 2005", died at the age of 114 years and six months. In 1950, France had only about 200 people aged 100 or more; today there are over 20,000! A hundred-fold increase in less than a lifetime! And a dozen people over age 110 (all women? Who Let the Genes Out?

More Procrastination: July 2006
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html
Should I be doing something else? Sunday, July 30, 2006. Let them eat mice! When the night after I returned from an extended absence my cat left a mouse on the stairs near my bedroom, I was pleased: both for him (successful hunt) and for myself (he still cared for me). I neglected to make it a FujiKodak moment. That was a couple of weeks ago, and in the mean time (heat wave and drought being the context) no new trophies. Last night he brought in a little baby mouse (judge the size compared to my finger):.

More Procrastination: November 2005
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html
Should I be doing something else? Friday, November 25, 2005. For the first time post-summer this year, snow fell here in North Alsace last night. Enough fell (and it was cold enough) for my street to look like this this morning. Posted by Maurice Lanselle @ 11:23 AM 0 comments. Tuesday, November 22, 2005. Among the questions and topics Desmond Morris treats in his classic book, "Catwatching", I don't recall finding these:. No, not by accident, repeatedly! I've tried both Audio S1. What Comes After Gamma?

More Procrastination: Power to the Bases
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2015/02/power-to-bases.html
Should I be doing something else? Thursday, February 26, 2015. Power to the Bases. Often without being aware of it, we express quantities using polynomials. I vaguely remember learning about a variety of other ways of representing numbers in writing, several decades ago in a history of mathematics course. My notes are not at hand, though, so take for example the Roman numerals as an example of non-polynomial representation. Is the nature of the following sequence now apparent? Comments: Post a Comment.

More Procrastination: April 2006
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html
Should I be doing something else? Sunday, April 30, 2006. About a week ago, I installed the videolan. Client media player. There were a number of good reasons for choosing it, but mainly it is open source and plays lots of media formats. The installation started badly: when I chose to change the installation directory from the default, the Windows directory tree dialog stopped responding. Hmmm, they didn't test their installer? I decided the best course of action was to use the Windows administration uti...

More Procrastination: On Buying Postage by Correspondence
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2014/10/on-buying-postage-by-correspondence.html
Should I be doing something else? Thursday, October 09, 2014. On Buying Postage by Correspondence. A postal service ought to be able to leave a sheet or two of stamps in a mailbox, oughtn't it? Assuming the stamps are bought and paid for, of course. It turns out the United States Postal Service cannot, or will not, if the buyer is overseas, even if the delivery address is in the United States. Create a personal U.S.P.S. customer account. See whether the stamps arrive. Once the appropriate article had bee...

More Procrastination: January 2006
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html
Should I be doing something else? Sunday, January 29, 2006. I appreciate a newspaper (journalism publishing organisation, now that paper is rarely the medium) which provides some history as well as current events and opinions. Such was the case in Liberation yesterday, in an article about an aspect of the French town of Montargis. Apparently, the same theme was the subject of an article. In Le Monde last March. In the 1920s, the town's Chinese community was inhabited for a time by the young. Add Li Shize...

More Procrastination: September 2005
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html
Should I be doing something else? Monday, September 26, 2005. The postal service occasionally amazes me; it rarely disappoints me, but then again, I wouldn't necessarily know that I hadn't received a letter unless I was expecting it. Once or twice a year, I receive someone else's mail: typically the same house number, but on another street in the neighborhood, or a letter for my next-door neighbors. What do others do in such a case? What ought I to do? Take it to the post office and turn it in? I live in...

More Procrastination: Round Squares and Gyration
http://uwwoonp.blogspot.com/2014/07/round-squares-and-gyration.html
Should I be doing something else? Thursday, July 17, 2014. Round Squares and Gyration. When I began driving motor vehicles in France and England over thirty years ago, a certain style of road junction was unfamiliar to me from driving a car in California. It is the junction called a roundabout. In English, rond-point. Still responds, but with an error connecting to the database. Is it still there, will access be restored? Displaced " rond point. In English. What I found was that yes, the term giratory.
