tales of a scorched earth

Tales of a scorched earth. Sunday, July 31, 2016. Election street signs. Image: News24. There are municipal elections coming up in South Africa this Wednesday the 3rd of August. I would consider myself a fairly active citizen, but I have not done nearly as much research into both the election process and the parties and their manifestos as I would have liked. If you live outside of a metro (city). If you haven't heard, or don't know anything about your ward councillors, get to know them! These helped me ...

tales of a scorched earth: Why insurance companies are bad

http://glentyler.blogspot.com/2013/03/why-insurance-companies-are-bad.html

Tales of a scorched earth. Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Why insurance companies are bad. They work against community. If you know anything about me, you'll know that that would be a sure-fire way to piss me off. Building, supporting and nurturing community is one of, if not the, most important way we can make the world a better place. Where do we like this? I really like this point of view, which is new for me, and that extends to rely on the community instead of payed services. And the other point of view...

tales of a scorched earth: Another corporate smut fest

http://glentyler.blogspot.com/2013/07/another-corporate-smut-fest.html

Tales of a scorched earth. Saturday, July 27, 2013. Another corporate smut fest. I'm doing the Walk the Talk. Tomorrow. It's a variety of lengths (I'm doing the 8km walk with Spencer, my dog) and proceeds go towards a community project - last year they built a bridge out of recycled plastic over a swampy part of Emmarentia Park. I'm still looking forward to walking 8km tomorrow with Spencer and the broader Joburg community. I will try and keep the real reason for being there in the front of my mind.

tales of a scorched earth: On Mandela's death

http://glentyler.blogspot.com/2013/12/on-mandelas-death.html

Tales of a scorched earth. Sunday, December 08, 2013. The recent death of Mandela has affected me more than I expected, and from talking to others, this is a shared experience. So while the news channels run 24/7 coverage of the unfolding of the death of a great man, I sit with a lap full of questions and unease. I am interested to see where both lead my country and myself. I appreciate the vulnerability of your questions. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

tales of a scorched earth: November 2014

http://glentyler.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Tales of a scorched earth. Sunday, November 23, 2014. Serving at a soup kitchen. Is the idea of serving in a soup kitchen okay? Is it really serving? Essentially soup kitchens are something that we would not like to have. That's my assumption, but I think most people would agree. The people who rely on soup kitchens, I'm sure would like to be doing other things than queueing for soup. Even if it is just eating a meal with friends (as opposed to queueing for it). Teaching someone to fish and all that.

tales of a scorched earth: January 2013

http://glentyler.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Tales of a scorched earth. Thursday, January 10, 2013. Walmart recently entered SA to much fanfare and consternation. Capitalists licked their jowls and trade unionists protested. Some people celebrated cheap prices and wider range, while some worried about their jobs. . What can you do about this? He walked off, I scolded my dog . Links to this post. I lived and taught English for two years in Taiwan. I travelled China and the rest of Asia, including South Africa. Now I live in Bristol. Tuesday, August 31. Today I bought my Fuzzy Yamaha scooter. Second hand, seems to be in good condition, costing 18,000 dollars (295 pounds). It's a 125cc (4 stroke), 1994 model with slogan; "Of The Wind Called". In fact most scooters have these little 'Chinglish' slogans. On the Yamaha Duke is; "Set me free - Let me alone". Want to read more slogans:. My Bro and Me.
