So if coming to Ghana to work in the Agriculture sector wasn’t good enough for my green thumb/brain, I just happen to be staying with a community of farmers. Spencer in Ghana: April 2009

http://goinggoingghana.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 5, 2009. Heading to the Upper West/Best. I'll be heading to the Upper West region of Ghana! More specifically, the Lawra district is where I'll call home this summer. The Upper west region has about half a million people, with 85,000 people in the Lawra district alone. Additionally, the overall poverty levels are declining, socio-economic and regional disparities are increasing and are linked to the lack of structural change in the economy. There is a strong urban rural difference in po...

Spencer in Ghana: June 2009

http://goinggoingghana.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Before hand, we spent a couple days to ourselves to reflect on our own experiences. We also were given the chance to check out Mole national park and play tourist. Mole (like guacaMOLE) was designated as a national park in 1971 and is the largest and best known of Ghana’s national parks. It comprises an area of 4840 square km of open savannah woodland, boval, riverine forest, floodplain grassland and swamp that supports a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Twas an amazing trip!

Spencer in Ghana: Through the Maize, over the hills and off to the village we go....

http://goinggoingghana.blogspot.com/2009/07/through-maize-over-hills-and-off-to.html

Thursday, July 30, 2009. Through the Maize, over the hills and off to the village we go. We emerged from the maze of trees and grass to discover a veritable ecosystem of human life. We are warmly welcomed by our hosts, whose kids run to us to collect and guide our bike inside. “Fo ziema! 8221; I greet the family and they all start laughing in shock at my Daagare. “A sorbe song? 8221; (how was the journey? More laughter. “Fo morah! 8221; the mother says (you’re doing well! A number of kids poke their head...

Spencer in Ghana: Obama is coming, Obama is coming!

http://goinggoingghana.blogspot.com/2009/07/obama-is-coming-obama-is-coming.html

Thursday, July 9, 2009. Obama is coming, Obama is coming! President Barack Obama is coming to Ghana, for “small-small” time. EWB is trying to get him to come to the north, or at least, address the issues of the north. Basically, we want him to give a shout out to all Ghana’s Northerners. How are we doing this? By asking Junior and Secondary school students in all the districts we are working with to answer the following questions:. 1 Why should Obama come to the north? Eremon SS students outside class.

Aline in Ghana: malaria bites

http://alineinghana.blogspot.com/2009/07/malaria-bites.html

Thursday, July 16, 2009. And so do the damn mosquitoes that gave me the parasite! Nevertheless, I went to the hospital the next morning feeling even more ridiculous about being there because by that point the fever had gone and all I had was a slight headache. However, it’s a really good thing I went because I ended up being diagnosed with severe malaria! Posted by Aline Bennett. August 1, 2009 at 7:16 AM. Do most people got for the $10/year plan? Are you feeling better now? August 11, 2009 at 1:30 PM.

Field Staff For A Day… Or Maybe 4! | The Adventures Of EWB And Michael Bosompra In Ghana

The Adventures Of EWB And Michael Bosompra In Ghana. Michael K. Bosompra in Ghana. July 17, 2009. Field Staff For A Day… Or Maybe 4! So I was given a pretty cool opportunity the other day. A friend of mine who works for the Environmental Health Department in the Zabzugu/Tatale District Assembly was preparing to go out and gather data from various communities (villages) in the southern part of the district and was willing to take me along with him! Now that all the background information is out of the way...

The Adventures Of EWB And Michael Bosompra In Ghana. Michael K. Bosompra in Ghana. May 23, 2009. Well actually I’ve been here for 1 night and 2 days) but regardless I figured it was the perfect time for first reactions. My first reactions were pretty good. Having spent the previous day in Saboba (Shamir’s district) I was coming in with some sort of image of what Zabzugu might look like; and let me tell you Zabzugu did not disappoint! A couple pictures I took while biking through the downtown area]. Imagi...

First Trip Out To The Field | The Adventures Of EWB And Michael Bosompra In Ghana

The Adventures Of EWB And Michael Bosompra In Ghana. Michael K. Bosompra in Ghana. June 9, 2009. First Trip Out To The Field. Today was one of my best days at work so far. I got to go out with the water and sanitation team and one of their donors to see a community led total sanitation (CLTS) project. The community we were going out to was about 1.5 hours away so we piled into the big white SUV (the epitome of development vehicles) and made our way out there. The pics on the left are the types of latrine...

The Adventures Of EWB And Michael Bosompra In Ghana. Michael K. Bosompra in Ghana. May 23, 2009. As I sit here Wednesday evening reflecting on my first days in Zabzugu a  few things strike me. The first thing is related to accommodation. When I was in Toronto it was pretty easy to sit around and say that I could handle the rural life. But when I first arrived in Zabzugu let me tell you I was straight up nervous! This morning my friend Kabona came to pick me up and take me to his home. This is Kabona’s co...

The Adventures Of EWB And Michael Bosompra In Ghana. Michael K. Bosompra in Ghana. May 23, 2009. Random Things I’ve Been Thinking About. Desba (good morning in Dogbani, to which you would reply Naaa). So, with that in mind I decided to investigate the situation a little bit and ask people why they wanted to go abroad. I got answers ranging from people trying to pursue post-graduate education to people wanting to live the lives that they think people live in North America. But to look at one side of the c...

The Amazing Adventures of Following Jesus

The Amazing Adventures of Following Jesus. Wednesday, October 31, 2012. And picked up a box of contact lens so that I can snorkel at the beach! My mom went home once we got to our street and Brian and I continued on to Pantip Plaza. Brian just wanted to walk around and look at all the electronics and gadgets. We had dinner plans with one of my mom's dear friend, Tuanta (I call her Aunt Tuanta). She took us to an amazing Thai/Chinese seafood restaurant. We were so stuffed. Once Care got off work, she came...
