Swansea Vale Sand Martin colony restored. Despite the freezing weather, the first Sand Martins have already arrived in the county and hopefully this urban colony will benefit from the excellent work undertaken by Sean and his team. Excellent views of what will hopefully be a busy colony can be enjoyed from the Swansea Vale footpath at SS67589877. Also keep an eye open for Goosanders and Dippers which are also frequent here. Booted Knight (Tricholoma focale). In a conifer plantation near Rhigos (14/11/16).

Gower Wildlife: January 2015

http://goweros.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Otter feeding in Fall Bay. I watched it diving for fish for a few minutes and then it surfaced with a pretty big fish (250-300mm long, I guess). It then swam towards the mouth of the bay and disappeared under water for a short time.Soon afterwards it appeared on the rocks under Tears Point, at the outer edge of Fall Bay, and spent about eight minutes eating the fish before sliding back into the sea. I feel I was very lucky to see this happening and to be able to photograph it. Otter feeding in Fall Bay.

After many peeks under wood at Crymlyn Burrows beach over the summer with no success I was pleased to see Nebria complanata hanging on at Cwm Ivy beach strandline under one of only 3 pieces of wood on about 1 km of beach! I saw a man and child carrying wood from further north back to, presumably Broughton. Hats off for enterprise but something really needs to be done about this, but how? Also a very active Red Admiral, and the temperature was only 7 degrees. We are aiming to identify key areas which can ...

Gower Wildlife: Scaeva selenitica at Nitten

http://goweros.blogspot.com/2015/07/scaeva-selenitica-at-nitten.html

Scaeva selenitica at Nitten. Back on the 16th July, I set a few light-traps in the Nitten Field at Mewslade in the hope of trapping some migrant moths, as the weather looked favourable. It transpired that it wasn't especially good for migrants, although there was an excellent selection of resident moths along with a selection of non-lepidopterans. Perhaps the pick of the crop were a couple of Scaeva selenitica. Heres hoping tonights southerly air flow brings one or two surprises. Welcome to Gower Wildlife.

An opulence of willow blossom. An easy-to-identify willow is the almond willow Salix triandra. It is a small willow and always floriferous - making it perhaps suitable for a wild garden and, like all willows (except the native S.cinerea. It is easily propagated from cuttings. The density of flowers (note that it has three stamens per floret, hence the specific epiphet ` triandra. Must surely also make it a good moth lure early in the season. Above: a general view of one of the Pwll almond willows. Initia...

Two New Flies for Swansea. Much of my natural history recording in recent years has been devoted to SN6802, my home 1km square, which includes some of Clydach and a small part of the Cwm Clydach RSPB reserve. In the last week, my efforts have been rewarded with a couple of nice finds. SEWBReC have advised that this is the first record they have received for P. hemiptera. And the Welsh Marches. Is a woodland hoverfly, similar to the much more common R. campestris. Stubbs and Falk 2002). With a bluish thor...

Personal comments and views about Swansea, South Wales. Saturday, 16 July 2011. Durness puffin colony © David Gill, 2011. We are back from watching one of the most northerly puffin colonies on mainland Britain, at Durness (not far from Cape Wrath) in Scotland. Some of the puffins were clearly cleaning out their burrows as sand was ejected in great flurries. There is a handy map. If you are wanting to find them. The iPad led us to the right spot.
