A passion for journalism and gardening. Archives for posts with tag: St. Louis. From Nose to Tail to Squeal. July 25, 2015. I have been privileged to dine at some great restaurants. It is one of the few privileges of being a journalist to dine with the rich and famous while you are neither. In St Louis, where chef Kevin Willmann is at the helm. Born into a farm family, raised on the Gulf of Mexico, trained in kitchens all over and then came home to cook his own food, a passionate blend of local ingre...

A passion for journalism and gardening. Archives for category: Gardening. Laquo; Older Entries. June 19, 2016. CRR is a tree hugger. Growing up on the sparsely-treed prairie, it was probably preordained that he would become a lover of trees. Now we have a big suburban yard with dozens of tree specimens, and CRR can name them all. When we first bought the property, the yard had been neglected for years. He brought in an arborist to identify the trees and diagnose what ailed them. A bigleaf magnolia, a mer...

A passion for journalism and gardening. Archives for posts with tag: family. The Boys Go Round and Round. June 3, 2015. My family has suffered a terrible tragedy. My 28-year-old nephew died over Memorial Day weekend while on a camping trip with his family deep in the mountains of Alaska. Dusty’s cause of death is still unknown. (Update: He died of heart failure). This one video struck deep in my heart: Dusty’s brothers and a friend, 20-somethings at play on a children’s carousel, snatching a few moments ...

A passion for journalism and gardening. Archives for posts with tag: spanakopita. June 28, 2015. We planted Swiss chard for the first time this year, our experiment of the year. Chard’s vibrant colors are a tip-off that it is packed with nutrients. Indeed, chard ranks third on the CDC’s list. Of powerhouse vegetables. I am a huge fan of spinach, so it should follow that I’d enjoy chard too. But it’s just a little too tough for my taste. We tried several recipes (thanks Michelle! 2 T extra virgin olive oil.

Grassroots Gardeners
Monday, October 12, 2009. Garden Meanderings- Sellout or sensible compromise? Anybody need some rosemary? I've several kilos of trimmings thanks to my half dozen healthy plants 'untimely ripped' in the poolside reno. They are now trimmed to a fraction of their former selves and potted up. OK how about trout? A few years ago, I innocently delivered a near fatal blow to wedded bliss. The crime was to buy an evaporation preventing poolcover. Major histrionics! Friday, September 18, 2009. Experience informat...

Grassroots & Gardening | A passion for journalism and gardening
A passion for journalism and gardening. July 10, 2017. July 10, 2017. CRR and I drove into the countryside on a recent lazy weekend, and veered off the main highways onto those beautiful lanes that remind us why we love living in Virginia. We visited two vineyards, enjoyed the scenery and then wandered into an orchard where we had picked apples with the boys when they were young. We were pleasantly astonished. 4-6 c pitted cherries (if using frozen, thaw them). 2 teaspoons baking powder. C butter, melted.
