Greener Ground

Sunday, November 17, 2013. A quick update today. One quick shot of cool air and it's back to being hot for this time of year. At least it is not too hot to grow and things are coming along. The peppers haven't done too much yet. A few Fooled You Jalapenos and finally a California Wonder Pepper is fruiting. With the wind being pretty strong lately the peppers have taken the brunt of it and they have been beat up. Here is the next crop of green beans. They are the same variety as was in the eggplant be...

Greener Ground: 9/23/12 - 9/30/12

http://www.greenerground.blogspot.com/2012_09_23_archive.html

Monday, September 24, 2012. First on the East side of the house we have the Carambola tree which is loaded with blooms. One thing I like about it is that it bears several crops all year long so you can keep on getting fruit to eat throughout the year. Next the Papaya have really taken off with the rain. They are loaded with fruit and we pick a couple every day or so. There is not much to worry about with them. Just plant them and make sure they get enough water and they do their thing. This bed was one h...

Monday, April 15, 2013. It's April and warming up around here. The garden has really been producing with not much bug activity because of the colder than normal March and the harvest has been plentiful. Here are some nice pics of how things are do now. First I have two kinds of canteloupe, Hales Best and Maverick growing on the east side of the house. They are blooming and I found a couple fruits hiding under the leaves. The pineapple are looking good, too. Next we have the garlic and Mr Big Peas which a...

Sunday, September 9, 2012. Well Summer is finally almost over and time to get planting for Fall! Some of the seeds I started. The top two contain different varieties of peppers and the bottom are Mici Hybrid Asian cucumbers. They produced well for me in the Spring and the flavor was very good. Probably some of the best tasting cukes I have ever grown. Here are the sweet potato beds finished now and ready to plant. Here is how I get the beds ready for planting. I start out with the bed. Then begin adding ...

Saturday, April 27, 2013. Today is the day to harvest the potatoes. These are the Red Pontiacs I planted back in January. They are supposed to take about 90 days to mature so I picked this weekend to harvest them which was a little more than 90 days. You can also tell they are ready when the vines die back. First up though we pulled up a crop of carrots. Now on to the potatoes. Here is what the vines look like when they are ready to harvest:. The first couple of plants:. And now the rest:.

Growing Food in Florida: When to harvest cowpeas and okra?

http://growyourfoodflorida.blogspot.com/2011/07/when-to-harvest-cowpeas-and-okra.html

Growing Food in Florida. Vegetable gardening advice for novice and pros. July 24, 2011. When to harvest cowpeas and okra? My readers asked, when do you pick okra and cowpeas? Usually it is advised to pick okra when it is three to four inches long. But what if you missed that stage? This overgrown okra will make a fine roasted okra dinner. The "non-pickable" okra should be left on the plant to mature and go to seed. Did you know you can make coffee out of okra seeds? You might also like:. Subscribe to: Po...

Growing Food in Florida: What can we plant in August in Florida?

http://growyourfoodflorida.blogspot.com/2011/08/what-can-we-plant-in-august-in-florida.html

Growing Food in Florida. Vegetable gardening advice for novice and pros. August 3, 2011. What can we plant in August in Florida? August is a very important month in terms of preparation for a fall harvest. All warm season vegetables that take two to four months to mature need to be seeded or transplanted into the ground in August so they can be harvested before Thanksgiving. Here in Florida it's spring planting all over again, with a bit of a twist. Amazingly, cowpeas. Tomatoes, peppers and eggplants s...

Growing Food in Florida: What to do with overgrown okra

http://growyourfoodflorida.blogspot.com/2012/07/what-to-do-with-overgrown-okra.html

Growing Food in Florida. Vegetable gardening advice for novice and pros. July 25, 2012. What to do with overgrown okra. First, do a "finger" test. Squeeze the okra pod with your thumb and your index finger. Does it give? Meaning, is it soft at all? If the answer is yes, then you can pick that pod and use it in your usual cooking, like fried or roasted okra recipe. Posted by Florida Gardener. Labels: Garden Calendar: July. Growing Food in Florida: Growing cow peas or cowpeas or black eyed peas

http://growyourfoodflorida.blogspot.com/2011/06/growing-cow-peas-or-cowpeas-or-black.html

Growing Food in Florida. Vegetable gardening advice for novice and pros. June 14, 2011. Growing cow peas or cowpeas or black eyed peas. As the name of this vegetable can be spelled in many different ways, as it is that useful to the gardener. Usually Florida gardeners are wondering what can they start in the summer. Regular beans do not do very well in the heat and humidity of our summers, but cowpeas do not care! At any given time I have cowpeas that are dry and ready to be harvested as a dry bean:.

Growing Food in Florida: Composting with chickens

http://growyourfoodflorida.blogspot.com/2014/09/composting-with-chickens.html

Growing Food in Florida. Vegetable gardening advice for novice and pros. September 1, 2014. It's September, finally! We can get ready to start our most productive and enjoyable fall season. I am cleaning my beds, ridding them of summer weeds, to prepare for the fall planting. This summer I let my beds overgrow with weeds, just did not have the time to weed or plant any cover crops. But, too many weeds is not as bad of a problem because all of them can be composted beautifully. But composting in a low pil...

Growing Food in Florida: Grow chickpeas from a grocery store

http://growyourfoodflorida.blogspot.com/2011/07/grow-chickpeas-from-grocery-store.html

Growing Food in Florida. Vegetable gardening advice for novice and pros. July 22, 2011. Grow chickpeas from a grocery store. I've been just a pantry sprouting queen lately. Everything I plant turns to green! The latest project was seeding chickpeas (garbanzo beans) from the grocery store bag. As usual, I buy store brand. I'm not even sure if they have a name brand beans in the store. But anyway, the project turned out very successful. I got myself some chickpeas in a bag:. Posted by Florida Gardener.

Growing Food in Florida. Vegetable gardening advice for novice and pros. July 18, 2013. Greens in the Florida Summer. We know that in the summer we might as well throw in the towel, or a shovel. Nothing grows but cowpeas and okra. Well, to be fair, quite a few seed heads fell onto the ground, and now, voila! I have radishes sprouting everywhere, even on the lawn. They are a predator insect, and feed on moths, mosquitoes, flies, and crickets, among other things. This particular individual decided to land on my seed catalog.
