Lobster became an important fish species to Woody Point after a slump in the herring fishery in the 1880's. From the late 1890s, seasonal work in the lumber woods became important to the economy. By 1976, the population had declined to 188 and by 1981 to 100. Some residents refused to move, even though there was official encouragement and restrictions on building, selling and inheriting homes.
