Notes on a Garden: March 2013
http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Monday, 11 March 2013. We decided to buy a couple more chickens last weekend as we're only getting one good egg from our other two at the moment. Fudge hardly ever lays an egg with a decent shell, so it is being eaten before we can get to it. There were lots of chickens to choose from:. Here are the two we chose, Bilbo and Frodo - yes, I know Bilbo and Frodo Baggins are male, but hobbits aren't human. That da...

Notes on a Garden: Adding a Splash of Spring Colour
http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2011/02/adding-splash-of-spring-colour.html
Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Thursday, 24 February 2011. Adding a Splash of Spring Colour. What a lovely day it was today; quite Spring-like. I had a thin jumper on, but didn't need a coat. The birds were singing and calling out to each other and for a while I was serenaded by a dunnock. He was quite close, but annoyingly I didn't have my camera to hand. The bed on the other side of the path has colour, but needs a good tidy up. I look f...

Notes on a Garden: The last of my Spring cabbages
http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2009/06/last-of-my-spring-cabbages.html
Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Sunday, 21 June 2009. The last of my Spring cabbages. Things are growing quite well in the garden at the moment. I just harvested the last of my pointed cabbages, which had been attacked a bit by a couple of slugs and some tiny green maggoty things. However, this was the worst one, most of the others only showed slug and snail damage on the outer leaves, which we don't eat. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Notes on a Garden: Chicken antics
http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2015/05/chicken-antics.html
Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Tuesday, 19 May 2015. As rain was forecast today I thought I'd let Stella and Doris have a run around on the grass while it was still sunny this morning. Frodo had distracted me, by looking like she had plans to fly out of her pen. Just before I took this photo she had been flapping her wings a lot. On reflection, I think this may have been her asserting herself as top chicken. A Speckeldy seems to be the sam...

Notes on a Garden: Chickens: a pullet's eggs and treating vent gleet
http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2015/05/chickens-vent-gleet-and-pullets-eggs.html
Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Friday, 15 May 2015. Chickens: a pullet's eggs and treating vent gleet. I don't know if I've already mentioned that I've given up work. What with that and Spring being well under way, I'm out in the garden more and so am taking more notice of the chickens. One thing I've noticed is that our older girls, Fudge and Frodo, have mucky bottoms. Meg started laying just over a week ago and hasn't had a break so far,...

Notes on a Garden: July 2012
http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Tuesday, 10 July 2012. I took the above photo on 26th April and have been trying to find out what it is. I've finally had it identified, thanks to Twitter, by Ian Beavis, Natural History specialist Entomologist from Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery, a follower of Brigit Strawbridge. Who is pretty passionate about bees. The internet certainly can be very useful at times. Monday, 2 July 2012. The queen h...

Notes on a Garden: Stella's first egg
http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2015/05/stellas-first-egg.html
Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Thursday, 21 May 2015. I went to visit my parents yesterday, so our daughter collected the eggs and Stella rewarded her by laying her very first little egg, weighing just 40 g, although not especially small for a first egg. However, we had trouble getting her to take the antibiotics and so were very pleased when Caroline at Surrey Poultry. Labels: Chickens: Pullets eggs. 24 May 2015 at 20:40. Thanks, Jo. ...

Notes on a Garden: October 2012
http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Thursday, 11 October 2012. As far as we can tell the bees are doing well. The first hive is very strong and well provided for. We acquired the second hive later in the season so this is not as big, but has still multiplied well and has a reasonable amount of stores. On a less positive note, we lost Amber yesterday, but she must have been about 4 years old as we have had her since February 2009. She was ge...
